does bible consistently show that when people FIRST recieve Holy Spirit they will speak in tongues?

this topic is controversial so lets get what bible says.. many people point out 1 cor 12 and 14 showing that Not all speak in tongues to prove that not everyone will speak in tongues when they recieve the Holy SPIRIT to dwell in them for salvation. the only problem wiht using those scriptures is that is will contradict what happened in acts 8, 10, and 19. because the instructions for USING GIFT OF TONGUES was that 2 at MOST 3 should speak in tongues.. one at a time and there MUST be interpreter.. therefore in those chapters we obviously see that was not the case because THEY ALL spoke in tongues.. and didnt have an interpreter let alone who would he be interpreting it for.. in acts 19 paul was there.. he wouldnt allow them to be out of order and go against his own instruction.. so therefore we must conclude ther are DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS of speaking in tongues.. could one of the functions be to SHOW PROOF one has now recieved the holy spirit? how can we rule this out.. now i spoke in tongues when recieved holy spirit for first time, but i do not have the gift of speaking in tongues in the church to deliver message.. two different functions.. now i have prayed and began to speak in tongues a few times but not all the time.. so how can we disclaim the evidence of speaking in tongues

PS anyone know where the "follow button went"?

Joe, you are one in a million. I have never met another one like you. It is a privilege to call you "brother."

Ning moves things around from time to time. The button at the bottom of the page is gone, but there is one under the main reply box that is located under the original post at the top of the page.

Joe,

When he was Baptist? Are we stereo-typing denominations now? Can a Baptist not receive it then? Is it just confined to the Holiness movement? Do I not have the Holy Spirit even though I'm told time and again that He abides in me? Is Christ abiding in me different then having the Holy Spirit?

I must agree with Joe but I'm going to take it a step further. Your comment sounds so holier-then-thou as if you are the only one who has it. Have you ever thought that maybe a little humility might help get your point across differently? I've never known anyone to be drawn by prideful arrogance. Forgive if I have you wrong but if you reread your statement, you might find that you offend yourself.

From a guy that was raised Pentecostal but walked away from it -

My parents were saved when I was at the age of seven in an Assembly of God Church. Everything I learned, experienced and developed a sort of theology came from that church. Over the years I became very disillusioned by much of what I saw and heard from teachers as I could see that much of it was not Scriptural. I do not want to enter into this debate. I ended up completely walking away from everything Pentecostal or charismatic. I have watched people being slain in the Spirit, saying the Spirit was speaking through them, claiming healing experiences where there were none, screaming, acting crazy in a church service and on and on I could go. I became a Baptist and then a Wesleyan (both wonderful denominations but not very open to individuals who believe that tongues is a valid gift but greatly misused in the church. I must say that if LT's position had been the one in the churches I was a part of, I don't think I would have ever left. This is the most accurate Biblical position I have ever read.

I am a Bible believer. I believe everything the Bible says. The Bible is my guide. I have met many wonderful people who are obviously filled with God's Spirit but have never spoken in tongues. I tend to prefer them as they don't act crazy in church. However, when one denies the gift, I know he is getting out of Scripture and into preference. I struggle with verses that demand that we do not forbid the speaking of tongues but then when we allow it people start acting crazy. I can see that Paul demanded that we act in a way in a church service that is proper and in order. He didn't want visitors to come in and think the church was nuts as I know has happened over and over. Well, to make a long story short, I am trying to come back to a church that does not insist a person speaks in tongues but is not opposed to it.

I heard a famous Pentecostal preacher say one time about Billy Graham, "Just think what he could do if he had been filled with the Holy Spirit." That is the kind of nonsense that I walked away from. No one in our nation has had more of the Spirit yet he did not speak in tongues. DL Moody testifies of an experience he had early in his ministry. After the experience he talked of preaching the same sermons but saw hundreds coming forward rather than just a few. Yet, he did not testify to ever speaking in tongues.

When I was younger I came to the conclusion that everyone was just babbling and was not really experiencing a gift. When you say that everyone has to speak in tongues as an evidence in order to be filled, you will generate all kinds of actions that probably are not from God. We all want to be like our peers. I once saw a wonderful lady friend of mine who wanted her husband to have the gift, put her hand in his mouth and move his tongue to get him talking in tongues. LT, you are absolutely correct. The Bible does not require that everyone speaks in tongues. However, at the same time, it does continue to speak of the use of the gift even after I would have thought its purpose was concluded. Thank you, LT, for your sensible answers to a very complicated and controversial issue. I have to admit that sometimes I wondered why God ever used this as a gift. But, then, I know God is God and He knows exactly what He is doing.

Blessed be our God!

Amen Roy,  Great response.

Thanks, Carla. I have come up with a conclusion. I don't know how our Lord puts up with all of us and all our craziness. We are fortunate to have such a patient Savior.

:-D

HE is wonderful.

He knows we all needed a doctor.

Roy,

Thanks for the positve word and feedback.

Awesome reply Roy. This answers any question I had

:)

Hi guys, can I join in the discussion?  :-)  I saw your posts earlier this morning and thought...Oh, I'll join in later. It was time to start work. Now I'm lost. Please forgive me if anything I say is repetitive. I have to get on the same wave length.

I speak in tongues, but I don't expect others to speak in tongues. Most of the speaking in tongues I do is in my private prayer life. So I'm curious. Greg, do you interpret too?  Or are you saying you don't because you said you don't do speaking in tongues in the church to deliver a message. Is that what you're talking about?

Love and God bless,

Mary
