All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

I read somewhere that oil that has been "anointed" is for sale.  For some reason this makes me uncomfortable.  I have seen preachers put oil on heads before and pray over people. That seemed a good thing. I do believe that the oil needs to be prayed over before using it. Why does it need to be bought? Who are the ones who pray over the oil and ask God to anoint it?  Why cant any of Gods people pray for the oil anointing instead of buying it?  I know somewhere in the bible it says to anoint your head with oil.  I am just curious ... thank you for any answer,

Whose to say it's even been prayed over & then if it has, they may not be a true Christian so it's no better then what I cook my chicken in.

This was what made up true holy anointing oil in the OT: Exodus 30:23-25 “Also take for yourself quality spices—five hundred shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much sweet-smelling cinnamon (two hundred and fifty shekels), two hundred and fifty shekels of sweet-smelling cane, 24 five hundred shekels of cassia, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a hin of olive oil. 25 And you shall make from these a holy anointing oil, an ointment compounded according to the art of the perfumer. It shall be a holy anointing oil.

30 And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister to Me as priests.

31 “And you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘This shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations. 32 It shall not be poured on man’s flesh; nor shall you make any other like it, according to its composition. It is holy, and it shall be holy to you. 33 Whoever compounds any like it, or whoever puts any of it on an outsider, shall be cut off from his people.’ ”

James 5:14 is the verse you're referring to. Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.

I haven't studied the oil in the NT so not sure if there are certain specifications with it. The churches I've attended just had plain olive oil & used it in praying over the sick as it says in this verse. Sounds like a good topic to check out though. I'm sure LT can give you more info on it.

I had completely forgot about asking this question. Tammy I guess I had never heard of the oil you mentioned from the OT. Thank you for posting it for me.

Stephen , They are wanting the oil to hide under some ones pillow or where ever they can. I am not sure exactly what they believe it doe they believe it will be helpful. Another time a lady gave me a cloth and said to put it somewhere on my mom for healing.

Once someone told me that the oiled cloth isn't nessasary today. I don't understand anything about it. Thank you both for taking time to comment.

Kinda sounds like a witchcraft spell doesn't it?

When Jesus came into the temple, He found traders in the Father's house. It had become a den of thieves. It is the same thing all over again. They sell all sorts of things, even that which Peter refused to sell to Simon the sorcerer at Samaria. Most of these guys are fake. In my opinion they are more on witchcraft than faith in Christ Jesus. How can anointing oil be taken as though it were magical?

We have one around these places, a pastor, who seems to have gone round the bend. He charges about 12 US$ to check whether ones name is still in the Lamb's book of life. And people line up to pay! Somewhere in the epistle to the Thessalonians it is written;.........'for this reason, God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.... '

May I ask.. Is it in order for one to consecrate bread and partake holy communion alone?

Hey girl... Here's an article from www.gotquestions.org ...it may help:

Question: "What does the Bible say about anointing oil?"

Answer:
Anointing oil, mentioned 20 times in Scripture, was used in the Old Testament for pouring on the head of the high priest and his descendants and sprinkling the tabernacle and its furnishings to mark them as holy and set apart to the Lord (Exodus 25:6; Leviticus 8:30; Numbers 4:16). Three times it is called the "holy, anointing oil," and the Jews were strictly forbidden from reproducing it for personal use (Exodus 30:32-33). The recipe for anointing oil is found in Exodus 30:23-24; it contained myrrh, cinnamon and other natural ingredients. There is no indication that the oil or the ingredients had any supernatural power. Rather, the strictness of the guidelines for creating the oil was a test of the obedience of the Israelites and a demonstration of the absolute holiness of God.

Only four New Testament passages refer to the practice of anointing with oil, and none of them offer an explanation for its use. We can draw our conclusions from context. In Mark 6:13, the disciples anoint the sick and heal them. In Mark 14:3-9, Mary anoints Jesus' feet as an act of worship. In James 5:14, the church elders anoint the sick with oil for healing. In Hebrews 1:8-9, God says to Christ as He returns triumphantly to heaven, "Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever," and God anoints Jesus "with the oil of gladness."

Should Christians use anointing oil today? There is nothing in Scripture that commands or even suggests that we should use similar oil today, but neither is there anything to forbid it. Oil is often used as a symbol for the Holy Spirit in the Bible as in the Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins (Matthew 25:1-13). As such, Christians have the presence of the oil of the Spirit who leads us into all truth and anoints us continually with His grace and comfort. “But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth” (1 John 2:20).
