All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Greetings all,

I would like to try something on TheNET. I would like to see if we can engage in a Bible study using the forums. I hope to simulate a small group setting, but realize that there will be lag time. Here are the parameters that we will work with ... and this is open to everyone.

1) We will attempt to work our way through the gospel of John.

2) We will not tolerate negative comments made about a person or persons.

3) We will use the S.O.A.P. approach which = Scripture - Observation - Application - Prayer.

... 3a) I will post a Scripture text from the Gospel of John using KJV (no copyright attached)

... 3b) We will seek to make observations about the particular text. What is being said, what is going on, who is involved and what might be the points being made?

... 3c) We will then attempt to find the application of the text/teaching to our lives today.

... 3d) Wrapping up with a prayer pertaining to that which we have sought to discern.

4) It is appropriate to ask questions along the way.

5) I will operate as the facilitator and teacher of this online group/class, but want the open participation of others.

6) At the end of one week I will close the current one and start a new one.

This works really well in a small group setting ... let's see how it works here.

First Week's Scripture:

Joh 1:1-18 KJV In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (2) The same was in the beginning with God. (3) All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. (4) In him was life; and the life was the light of men. (5) And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. (6) There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. (7) The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. (8) He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. (9) That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. (10) He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. (11) He came unto his own, and his own received him not. (12) But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: (13) Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. (14) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. (15) John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me. (16) And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. (17) For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. (18) No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

Yes, each publisher has its own criteria regarding usage. I will be posting the whole of John, if this takes off. People are free to read it in another version and respond here. I would only ask that they would specify what version they are using, especially if it deals with a specific word or usage of language that differs from the KJV.

I have trouble understanding some of the publishers' criteria, but you won't be quoting the whole book in one posting. I love the KJV and every verse I have committed to memory is from the KJV but I rarely read it anymore. More modern language helps me better understand the written word. I'll definitely specify the version I'm using and, hopefully, meet the copyright guidelines when I quote from it. I was never concerned about it before but I think we ought to be able to quote God's Word and discuss it freely, and we still can, for God will show us how, and those who would try to make us ashamed will see our good life, or something like 1 Peter 3:16 says, is what I mean. I want to do it all the right way and not give up.

I believe that this particular portion of scripture answers the Pharisees' (and perhaps our) question about "by whose authority do you do these things".

"The Word was with God"

"The same was in the beginning with God"

"All things were made by Him"

"But as many as received Him, to them He gave power to become the sons of God."

"The life was the light of men"

"Grace and truth came by Jesus Christ".

"No one has seen God at any time: the ONLY  BEGOTTEN SON, which is in the bosom of the Father, HE HAS DECLARED HIM ( CAPITALS MINE).

All of these ,and many more claims, testify to the absolute authority of Christ in all of His teachings and actions. It is kind of like His resume (perhaps a poor choice of words).

He is the life, the light ,grace and truth personified. All of His examples and teaching have their source in the source of ALL things.

The 'lesson' to be learned from this is that we can completely trust His teachings because of His authority as originator and sustainer of all things.

Good word.

12) But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name

What does 'power' mean in this verse?   Thank you in advance.

The basic meaning of the Greek word translated as power her in the KJV can be translated as power, authority or right. In essence Jesus has given His power/authority so that man may become a child of God. He has authorized it, given His approval, almost like a king giving someone his signet ring.

We also know, that after the resurrection that all who received Him (those born again) received the Holy Spirit to dwell in them and thus as the Holy Spirit is God we are possessed/indwelt by God and indwelt by His very nature which includes His power.

That is also the same power that raised Christ from the dead. That is some powerful stuff right there - raising people from the dead. That power indwells those who have received Him.

Amen!!!

Confused, in the NKJV, it uses the word "right" instead of power. This is what I got from my LOGOS 5 program & it got it from The Complete Word Study Dictionary: New Testament -

It is permissible, allowed. Permission, authority, right, liberty, power to do something (Acts 26:12). As éxesti denies the presence of a hindrance, it may be used either of the capability or the right to do a certain action. The words éxesti and exousía combine the two ideas of right and might. As far as right, authority, or capability is concerned, it involves ability, power, strength (dúnamis [1411]) as in Matt. 9:8; 28:18.

LT, good idea,

Verse 14 is very important. Basically, The Holy Spirit has John state that  Jesus became flesh. This reinforces Him being born as a human baby....and growing up like everybody else. This was all necessary for God's complete plan for redemptive process.

Some from the enemy's camp maintain that Jesus stayed in godly form the whole time He was on earth.

I John 4:2-3, " By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God. (3) And every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world." NKJV.

Also, the part about Jesus dwelling among us.........literally means "He pitched His tent in the neighborhood".

Grace and Peace to the study group.

To me, Jesus was fully God and fully man during His earthly ministry. I used to think He used His deity to do at least some of the miracles, signs and wonders, and, of course, He claimed to be the Son of God and to be sent from God while here. I believe He was always God. After more careful study of Scripture, it appears to me, now that He lived here only living out of His fully human form and was filled with  the Holy Spirit. Yet, He was always fully God while here, too. I've never heard anyone teach that He was only in godly form during His life on earth. I have heard plenty teaching that Jesus wasn't deity and isn't deity. The JW's for instance. As a human, the Son of God had a beginning in human form. Yet, it was the plan from the foundation of the world, for as the Son of God, He is infinite and eternal, not created, but Creator. This is my understanding.
“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). Matthew 1:23, ESV.
