All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Who wants to take a crack at the list of propositions, reduced to its irreducible minimum, that MUST be believed in order to be saved?  By "saved," I mean eternal life with God.

What is the bare minimum for saving faith?

And I mean this literally.  If, in your view of things, it is not essential to salvation that one believe it, don't put it on your list.  "Irreducible minimum" is what I'm going for here.

1 Corinthians
Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and bin which you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.
3 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.

Here 3 things are stated to which one must believe to be saved: 1) Christ died for our sins 2) He was buried 3) He rose again.  One must not merely believe that He died, but that He died for our sins. I believe the grave is the core to our beliefs.

Tammy,

Thank you for responding to my post.  Jesus' life, death and resurrection is central to salvation, according to the Apostle Paul in 1st Corinthians 15, which you shared.

How does this align with:

  1. Jesus' responses when asked, "What is necessary to have eternal life?" in
    a)  Matthew 19 and
    b)  Luke 10.
  2. The Gospel of John, including Jesus' encounter with Nicodemus?
  3. Do we need also to repent of our sins (Gospels of Mark and Luke) and confess Jesus as Lord (Romans)?
  4. Do we need to believe that Jesus is God incarnate (God taking on a human body and being both fully divine and fully human--the 2nd person of the Trinity)?

Do these and/or other writings from the Bible suggest we should add to Paul's summary in 1st Corinthians 15:1-4 to clarify and fully capture what we must believe in order to be saved?

Colby

Absolutely. You know me & my short replies though. :)

Short, yes; but, more importantly, to the point!

Colby,

I would select John 3:16 as my answer. This is God's message to us that would be saved.

Blessings.....

Rita

Rita,

Thanks for sharing.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life" (Jn3:16).

Here's a follow-up question to that verse.
  • What does it mean to "believe in him?"
  • What, specifically, must we believe about Jesus, the Son of God, to have eternal life?
Colby

Colby,

You asked for the minimum so I gave you the minimum. If a person believes something, they are convinced. God wants us to be convinced. I am convinced that the Bible is the Word of God. As I believe what the Bible says, convinced of what it says, I am in right standing with God.

I'm sure that you want me to say more but then I am going past the minimum. Jesus said Himself that He was the Son of God.

Blessings.....

Rita

lololol. Colby knows he's going to get the minimum out of me regardless of the discussion. lololol. He's not questioning your beliefs as much as he's wanting to expound on the discussion but also keep control so it doesn't go off topic as we're so good at doing on AAG. I think. :)

Another great one Rita

The scripture that adds more emphasis to the message is Romans 10:8-10

" But what does it say? The word is near you, even in your mouth and in your heart: that is the word of faith which

    we preach;

That if you will confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

For with the heart man believes unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."

"Believing in your heart" means that we acknowledge that the Word of God concerning Jesus ( as was stated in  I Cor.15:1-4) is the concept(for lack of a better word) that we have all our hope in this life and the next placed in.

God bless

Charles,

Thank you.

  • Does our salvation hinge on one essential doctrine only: believing that God resurrected Jesus?
  • Is there anything else we must believe in addition to what Paul wrote in Romans 10:8-10 and 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 in order to be saved?
  • Do we need to repent of our sins, be "born again," believe that Jesus is God incarnate, etc.?

My reasoning behind the use of this scripture is that : when it stated about 'confessing the Lord Jesus 'this means that we are also acknowledging His teaching and are committing to follow them. That ,to me anyhow , is what' calling Him Lord' entails.   I realize that may be a little bit of a stretch but that was the reasoming behind this scripture.

God bless.
