All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Can someone clarify something for me?

speaking of Jesus:

8 Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him...

this is the part that confuses me:

10 and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.

What is the "order of Melchizedek"?

I have heard New Agers use this phrase and know what they speak of is a false Christ. So what is it really?

God bless,

Jenny

There is not a lot said of Melchizedek. He appears on the scene in Gen 14. He was the king of Salem, brought out bread & wine,&  priest of God Most High. Abram met him & Melchizedek blessed him. Abram gave him a tithe of all. The meaning of his name is "My King is Righteous". Salem is an older, shorter name for Jerusalem. Abraham receives the meal and blessing used here to celebrate God's deliverance of Abram & his troops. The term for God used here expresses God's power over the nations. He appears from nowhere with no details of parentage. The writer of Hebrews compares him with another priest, Jesus.  He blesses Abram with two lines "Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand." Abram's gift (tithe) shows he is a true priest of the living God.  This priest vanishes from any recorded history after his brief encounter recorded in Genesis. This is typology of in the priest mediating the Passover giving a future reference to the Son who would also do this by his own body. Mt. 26:26-28)

One thing I find interesting is Mel brings the meal. In any other situation, the host would have provided the meal. He provided bread & wine - His body & blood. Hallelujah!!!!!!!!!

How do you even pronouce that name? Wow...

1Mel•chiz•e•dek \mel-ˈki-zə-ˌdek\ n

Hope you can understand with no sound. This is how it's broken down for sounding out.

Blessings.....

Ps 110:4  The LORD has taken an oath and will not break his vow: "You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek."  Clarkes says this...  in the psalm after God is said to have invited him to sit at his right hand, it is reasonable to think the salutation was given him after he had offered the sacrifice of himself; and had taken his seat at God's right hand. Considered in this order, the salutation of Jesus, as a priest after the order of Melchisedec, was a public declaration on the part of God that he accepted the sacrifice of himself, which Jesus then offered, as a sufficient atonement for the sin of the world, and approved of the whole of his ministrations on earth, and confirmed all the effects of that meritorious sacrifice,...Gills Exposition Called of God an high priest, after the order of Melchisedec. , according to what is said of him, Psalm 110:4 there is a resemblance between Melchizedek and Christ; many things that are said of the one, agree with the other: there is a likeness in Melchizedek to Christ; in his person, and what is said of him, that he was without father and mother; and in his office as a priest, and in the manner of his instalment into it; and in the antiquity, dignity, and perpetuity of it: and this is repeated for the further confirmation of Christ's priesthood, and is a conclusion of the truth of it from sufficient evidence: this does not so much design the constitution of Christ as priest, nor the call of him to that office, as the denomination or surnaming of him a priest of Melchizedek's order, because of the agreement between them; and contains a reason of Christ's being the author of eternal salvation, because he is a priest for ever; and prevents any objections against Christ's priesthood, and opens a way to discourse more largely concerning it.

Hope this helps

thanks all,

i think i need to stay with the milk; this stuff seems like solid food of which i'm not ready for yet...

love,

jenny

which i say because i don't understand what either of you said

lol. Sorry. Let me go redneck. Abraham ran across a dude whose name was Melchizedek (Mel). It never tells you anything about him except he was a priest of Salem (short for Jerusalem). Abraham gave him a tithe of all he had. Mel is like a foreshadow of Christ that was to come.

Heb 7:1 This Melchizedek was king of the city of Salem and also a priest of God Most High. When Abraham was returning home after winning a great battle against the kings, Melchizedek met him and blessed him.
Barnes ...The meaning is, that Melchizedek was of a special rank or order; that he was not numbered with the Levitical priests, and that there were important features in his office which differed from theirs. In those features it was distinctly predicted that the Messiah would resemble him.
Ps 110:4 The LORD has taken an oath and will not break His vow: "You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek."
Genesis 14:18-20 18 And Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High, brought Abram some bread and wine. 19 Melchizedek blessed Abram with this blessing:
“Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. 20 And blessed be God Most High, who has defeated your enemies for you.” Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the goods he had recovered.
Heb 7:21 but there was an oath regarding Jesus. For God said to him, "The LORD has taken an oath and will not break his vow: 'You are a Priest forever.'"

Melchizedek is believed to be the incarnate Christ of the Old Testament and the Great High Priest.  Check the following scriptures where Abraham paid Him homage in Genesis 14:

18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High,19 and he blessed Abram, saying,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,
    Creator of heaven and earth.
20 And praise be to God Most High,
who delivered your enemies into your hand.”

Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

Do a study on it and read it in several translations, it is fascinating to see Jesus in the Old Testament, He is everywhere!

are you saying the Jesus was incarnate twice?

Jenny, I think the word you want is *preincarnate*.

: of, relating to, or having existence before incarnation — used especially of the second person of the Trinity

This is one of the questions that will be answered as you grow in the Lord. God gave us little information on Melchizedek so we could see Christ in him, in his likeness.

I've also heard him called a foreshadow of Christ. In other words, a picture of The One to come, i.e.Christ.

Blessings as you sort this out.....

Rita
