All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

does bible consistently show that when people FIRST recieve Holy Spirit they will speak in tongues?

this topic is controversial so lets get what bible says.. many people point out 1 cor 12 and 14 showing that Not all speak in tongues to prove that not everyone will speak in tongues when they recieve the Holy SPIRIT to dwell in them for salvation. the only problem wiht using those scriptures is that is will contradict what happened in acts 8, 10, and 19. because the instructions for USING GIFT OF TONGUES was that 2 at MOST 3 should speak in tongues.. one at a time and there MUST be interpreter.. therefore in those chapters we obviously see that was not the case because THEY ALL spoke in tongues.. and didnt have an interpreter let alone who would he be interpreting it for.. in acts 19 paul was there.. he wouldnt allow them to be out of order and go against his own instruction.. so therefore we must conclude ther are DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS of speaking in tongues.. could one of the functions be to SHOW PROOF one has now recieved the holy spirit? how can we rule this out.. now i spoke in tongues when recieved holy spirit for first time, but i do not have the gift of speaking in tongues in the church to deliver message.. two different functions.. now i have prayed and began to speak in tongues a few times but not all the time.. so how can we disclaim the evidence of speaking in tongues

Didn't say I was silent.

Then what language is being spoken out loud that others can hear but not understand?

lol. You ever been to North Carolina? You ever heard a redneck hick?

I'm backing off brother. I have my beliefs & others have theirs. We could be here for another century & no one would agree on this. I normally don't get caught up in this particular topic, or once saved always saved, or the tithe discussion. Normally, no one changes their minds & at times they get heated when we lose sight of the more important focus. We forget we're iron sharpening iron & we become "right" fighters.

I pray everyone's love may abound still more & more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness.

Tammy,

No, people can change their minds. I walked away and then came back because I could see the other way was denying His Word and I am not willing to do that just because I don't want people to act crazy. I still do not like the crazy part but how is it possible to forbid people to speak in tongues when we are specifically told not to. I did forbid it and realized I better rethink my position.

Tammy,

Actually have been all over the Carolina's on vacation and work. I understand redneck better than I understand English, as I am a Florida Cracker (country boy) who spent his teen years in the country roaming the woods :-)

Wow. I must have entered this discussion late because I didn't see the two novels that LT & Greg wrote.

This is an old discussion that has resurfaced. This topic always tends to be a hot topic.

Well, I can say that there has been some excellent posts on this subject within the last few minutes, but I am having problems finding where to respond to them. This one is especially good and I don't want it to get lost in the shuffle.

Let me start by saying that for one to pray in tongues they must be praying in the (by) Spirit, but that praying in the Spirit is not limited to praying in tongues. We understand that all born again children of God receive the Spirit of God, as a deposit which is different from being filled, and have access to the throne of grace. Our current access to the throne of grace is a spiritual access and thus is enabled spiritually. A born again child of God's prayer is in conjunction with the Spirit. This is true of tongues or in a natural tongue. Take this a step further. What is true prayer? It is communication with the living God and for the believer this communication is dependent on and enabled by the Holy Spirit.

Being filled with the Holy Spirit has more to do with surrender and empowerment to live out the life Christ has called us to. There are many terms for the Spirit filling, but the end result is a Deeper Christian life. LT

It just doesn't seem that anyone who has an experience of Holy Ghost Baptism would not speak in a heavenly language-- I mean being baptized or flooded thoroughly with the Spirit--how could the Spirit not speak with the person's tongue in such an event? Then one must ask if the baptism only happens to the truly saved, or if one can be born again but never receive the Holy Ghost Baptism? Because obviously many feel they are saved but do not speak in tongues or attest to having had a second work of grace. It makes the narrow way that much more narrow.

Living surrendered to Christ so that it is He that lives through you is a very narrow way. It begins with a surrender that says "Not my will, but Your wil be done" and then follows that up by seeking it to come to pass. In other words not just lip service, but in action out of love for Him as empowered by Him.

This, then, means then that unless we have been baptized with the Holy Ghost evidenced by speaking in tongues then we are not on the narrow way, not saved? I am confused by your statements. It's not your fault. It's me. There are many living for Jesus and walking with God and not just giving lip service who don't have the gift of tongues. Are they not really saved? Then tongues is evidence that one is saved. I see better why satan counterfeits them. People think they have the gift and it means they are really saved ... when they aren't. How sad.

Amanda,

Now I am confused by your comment. How in the world do you read that into what I said. I did not even mention tongues in that last reply. How many times have I stated that the gift is not the evidence, but only one of the possible gifts. Being Spirit filled does not mean you will speak in tongues. That is and has been my position ....
