does bible consistently show that when people FIRST recieve Holy Spirit they will speak in tongues?

this topic is controversial so lets get what bible says.. many people point out 1 cor 12 and 14 showing that Not all speak in tongues to prove that not everyone will speak in tongues when they recieve the Holy SPIRIT to dwell in them for salvation. the only problem wiht using those scriptures is that is will contradict what happened in acts 8, 10, and 19. because the instructions for USING GIFT OF TONGUES was that 2 at MOST 3 should speak in tongues.. one at a time and there MUST be interpreter.. therefore in those chapters we obviously see that was not the case because THEY ALL spoke in tongues.. and didnt have an interpreter let alone who would he be interpreting it for.. in acts 19 paul was there.. he wouldnt allow them to be out of order and go against his own instruction.. so therefore we must conclude ther are DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS of speaking in tongues.. could one of the functions be to SHOW PROOF one has now recieved the holy spirit? how can we rule this out.. now i spoke in tongues when recieved holy spirit for first time, but i do not have the gift of speaking in tongues in the church to deliver message.. two different functions.. now i have prayed and began to speak in tongues a few times but not all the time.. so how can we disclaim the evidence of speaking in tongues

Ok, Mary O, now you have me curious. When you speak in another tongue in church and someone interprets, what is usually the interpretation? I know that God does this but I am wondering why He does it this way. Why not just prompt someone to say what He wants that person to say? Are these words of encouragement or words of instruction? Is there ever a new revelation of something that is not revealed to us in the Word? Since we have been in the prayer room together quite a bit, I know you have a special anointing to pray for people. You come across to me as a very wise person. Why would God have us speak in another tongue and then interpret that in a language that everyone understands.

I have only had that happen to me once. It was when the doctor told me at one of my son's birth that he probably was not going to make it. I would have done anything at that moment to get a prayer through to God. I spoke in another language and then interpreted. That happened in 1984 and not since. I think that God does things in a very strange way sometimes. When that doctor told me that my son was probably not going to make it I felt as if I had been hit by a baseball bat. I was totally defeated. I had not an ounce of strength. I asked God for help as I did not have any faith and my wife had been put to sleep by the doctors. She is the prayer person in our family. I began to speak in this strange tongue and my faith began to grow. Soon, I was a warrior. I had plenty of faith to see my son healed and others in that hospital as well. However, that is not a gift that normally works within me. I sometimes wonder if it is because of pride or whatever. I do feel that if the need like that ever arises again, I will have someone to turn to for help. I am amazed by God and really wonder why He chooses to have people speak in a different language. I continue to think that much of what I hear on TV and in church, might just be some pretending but I better be careful or I will get in trouble. He gives us the ability to think but He absolutely scares me. I would never speak against the Holy Spirit.

Hi Roy,

I've heard interpretation of tongues, and I've tried it. I felt it was very beautiful. To get an idea of what it sounded like, look at Psalms. It's not like memorizing Bible verses and then reciting them after speaking in tongues. What I heard didn't contradict the Word of God.  The interpretations were  praise and thanksgiving. Psalms is the best example I can think of. Only maybe 2 or 3 people did it. I felt this was genuine.

But...I don't expect everyone to speak in tongues. And I don't expect everyone to interpret. I don't believe in pressuring people to try it. This fellowship I went to, they got in a circle and had a person in the middle of the circle and pressured that person to speak in tongues. They also tried to cast a devil out of a person the same way. My hands were shaking when the service was over. It was so wrong.

I don't like to have everyone speaking in tongues at the same time. I've seen and heard it in some churches. And I tried it a couple times where everyone was speaking in tongues or whatever they wanted to do, and it didn't feel right. It was bedlam. That's just not for me. I think God was saying this isn't the way I want it done.

I've seen the good and then I've seen abuses. 

This is just my personal opinion. For me, speaking in tongues in my private prayer life is fine. I'm not completely dismissing interpretation of tongues. If I try it,  I want people around me to receive blessings from it. I want them to say God is in you of a truth.

I was curious if Greg had tried to speak in tongues and then interpretation of tongues.

:) Very Good. I agree. I just have one question: How do you try it? Isn't it true that either God gives you the gift or that He chooses not to give you the gift. Scripture does appear to be indicating to us to earnestly seek the gifts especially those that are beneficial to all. I would think that  gift where we all would be blessed by a message in tongues and then an interpretation would be one that is beneficial. All gifts are beneficial but some are not as beneficial to the congregation as others it appears. Growing up in a Pentecostal church I learned to resent the show that came with the gifts. I got to the place that I did not want to be in a service where any gifts were used. I have seen so many showing off their gift. We have just come through a very reckless time here in America where the gifts have been greatly misused. Some have used them to gain wealth. I really struggle with that. However, just walking away from anything that had to do with the gifts of the Spirit was not the right move on my part.

I think I would agree with your statement to try it if you have the gift. Otherwise, I don't think it would be profitable for anyone. However, it is very obvious that God is leading you and I respect your opinions. I see you were able to see completely through all the bedlam that has been in so many churches over the past several decades. Hopefully, we are growing up and getting away from that as the Scripture does speak against that.

How can I know that I have it unless I try? I was hoping I could speak in tongues. I had this strong desire.

Richard David Bach quote - You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it come true. You may have to work for it, however.

A Christian friend helped me. He prayed for me and about receiving holy spirit. Then he said to close my eyes and take a few good breathes and then speak in tongues. It happened. I just listened to his prayer and tried it.

And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. (John 20:22)

He that believes on me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (John 7:38)

Since you grew up in a Pentacostal church, you can appreciate what I said  about abuses. It scared me. I didn't know what to think.

I mostly speak in tongues during my prayer time.

I don't have all the answers on that one and probably not the right one to answer it. It certainly is obvious, however, on its first occasion that the miraculous power of God was very evident. God was showing these people that He was in complete support of this meeting of the followers of Christ and that He certainly was going to empower them to take this message to the entire world even to the point of enabling them to speak supernaturally in other languages.

Then, tongues were a sign that God was going to treat His Gentile followers equally and in the same manner as His Jewish children. The last mention of its occurrence in the Book of Acts is in the 19th chapter. While I don't believe that all have to speak in tongues, Acts 19 does seem to indicate to me a sort of pattern that many when receiving Christ and His baptism will speak in tongues. However, Scripture never demands that receiving Christ or His baptism requires a receiving or demonstration of this supernatural gift.

Now, quite obviously, among the Gentiles for sure as evidenced by this Corinthian church, many of them had indeed received this gift. It became necessary for Paul to give instruction on its purpose and use. He puts the gift into context. To me I would have thought that by this time it would have served its purpose and would have been ceased. However, this is quite obviously not the case.

A couple of things: 1) the speaker was given power by the Spirit to speak in other tongues, 2) the speaker did not understand what he was saying unless he was also supernaturally gifted to interpret the foreign or language foreign to him and 3) he was encouraged not to use the gift publicly unless there was someone to interpret. 

The  gift shows us that God still works supernaturally among His people and sometimes supernaturally speaks words of encouragement and inspiration to them. You would think, since we have the Word, its purpose would have been ended. Obviously, not so.

I am sure you will get many more comments on your quite important and relevant question.

In my belief, I feel the tongues used today are when a pastor may be speaking English but the others hear it in their native language.

It is plausible that God does this and history has witnessed this, but there is a gift that is used to speak to God specifically.

 

1Co_14:2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
