All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

I'd like to get opinions on what this verse means to you.

From my own church's beliefs:

In water baptism by immersion, and all who repent should be baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

In my reading this morning, this stood out to

Acts 19
1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.

4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

7 And all the men were about twelve.

These had been water baptized by John yet had not yet accepted Christ and been baptized in the Spirit.

I found this interesting tonight in my reading.

1Co 1:12-18 NASB Now I mean this, that each one of you is saying, "I am of Paul," and "I of Apollos," and "I of Cephas," and "I of Christ." (13) Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? (14) I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, (15) so that no one would say you were baptized in my name. (16) Now I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any other. (17) For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not in cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made void. (18) For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (italics mine)

If baptism was critical to salvation instead of an act of obedience after one is saved why would Paul state he was not sent to baptize, but to preach the gospel. Hear I believe he clearly separates the baptism from the gospel of salvation, because what he preached was the cross ... the power of God to be saved.

Lord Bless,

Great point

Tanya,

For the sake of anyone that may have read your post and was left doubting...

Your post has been removed for two reasons. First it violates the member agreement you agreed to when you signed up. Which states you agree to the statement of faith, which in part says:

The Bible is the inerrant, inspired Word of God - a supernaturally integrated set of 66 books, written by 40 authors, over nearly 2,000 years.

Jesus died a physical death on the cross as the ultimate love sacrifice and act of grace, which allows all who believe in Him to be cleansed of sin by His blood and have a renewed, eternal relationship with God.

Your talk of celestial realms isn't much different than Buddhism or Hindu or a myriad of other religions which makes the entire Bible out to be fake, rather than only parts as you claim. Because it doesn't point to one thing that separates Christianity from any other religion.

The words were written by prophets which have been proven by seeing such prophecies come true in history. They were written by the disciples who walked with the Christ you said was the embodiment of God's love and yet claim Christ's words penned by His disciples is false because you said no belief in the blood sacrifice will transform a person. Yet many here could testify they have witnessed to such transformation.

The Bible is taken from translated manuscripts and not from inserted text. Any search through an interlinear site can easily show the translations based on other scriptures.

Just as you said you prefer the KJV, as it differed in that it omitted born of water and spirit, other scriptures do reference this which is why it is included as a whole.

One cannot believe Christ's message of love while disbelieving the rest of His words.
If you look at jn 3:5 only understanding what Jesus was addressing will be difficult.
Let's look at this context which he was speaking from.

Jesus Teaches Nicodemus

3 Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus who was a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.”

3 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.[a]”

4 “How can someone be born when they are old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!”

5 Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You[c] must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”[d]

9 “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.

10 “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 Very truly I tell you, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man.[e] 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness,so the Son of Man must be lifted up,[f] 15 that everyone who believesmay have eternal life in him.”[g]

Jesus was addressing religious elements in the high priests, they preach but they themselves they don't have the mind of God. Unless you study the word and truly your revelation is in line with God's plan it is not of God. You'll find Paul addressing Timothy to test their spirit. It is because even today we have ministers of the gospel preaching the Bible but they have not given their lives to the leadership of the Holy Spirit. We find ourselves in preachers who are driven by gospel of wealth to enrich themselves.
