You mean like Romans 8:26? http://bible.cc/romans/8-26.htm

Hi Elizabeth,

Yes, i have experienced that.  I usually say something like this:

Heavenly Father,

"Right now, I don't know what to pray.  I just know that I need to be close to You and to talk to You.  I need to be strong just by being with You.  I love You Lord, i thank You that you will never leave me or forsake me.  Thank you Lord that you are always working in my life...."

Elizabeth..  as I talk like this to our Heavenly Father, things start to come to mind to pray for...

Do you have any unsaved loved ones?

Are you struggling with any particular sin to give up?

Is there anything in your life that is getting more attention than God is getting?

Is there a ministry that God is leading you into that you need clarity over?

Do you have family members who need guidance, direction, wisdom and discernement?

Try to journal...  If you are not someone who writes things down, perhaps you could try a voice recorder.

My oldest son is dyslexic... so writing, printing and spelling for him is torture..  I recommend to him to use a voice recorder.

The most important thing though...  don't stop praying even though you don't quite know what to pray.

I have done that and it always left me dry and unfed---undernourished--

Jesus is our life...  As we pray He will fill us.

I'm convinced that one of the main purposes of prayer is to teach us to submit and ask--we learn to ask for the things that matter to God...in this process we become more like Jesus.  :-)

Bless you... Carla

We all go through times that we can become drained but in these times we try to remember balance to our lives is important.

God can renew our strength has he has promised in His word.

And when we do not know what to pray for we ask the help of the Holy Spirit .

God wants us to come to Him in prayer

Elizabeth, this happens to me sometimes.  I wake up with the intention to pray and can't even think of what to pray for.  All I say is:  Father Lord thank You!  I find it easier to sing in times like this.  The Holy Spirit always comes to our aid, when we do not know what to pray for.  Praising Him with songs or hymns is a good way to go when words fail us.

Whatever your needs are, Jesus is the answer. Trust Him to take care of your cares and worries.

Blesings!

Elizabeth Carol,

Three passages from God's written word concerning prayer come to mind as I ponder your question.

  • "Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.
Pray for us, too, that God will give us many opportunities to speak about
his mysterious plan concerning Christ. ... Pray that I will proclaim this
message as clearly as I should." (C0lossians 4:2-4, NLT).

  • "Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be
persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere" (Ephesians 6:18
    , NLT).

There are many things we can and should pray for.  God listens to and answers our prayers.  In addition to the needs of ourselves, our loved ones and friends, we can pray for the many people in the world that desperately need our prayers: the marginalized; those that are hurting, suffering and without hope.  Victims of war, oppression, starvation and malnutrition, injustice, poverty, crime, etc.  If it is helpful, think about all the reasons and people you might want to pray for and make a list to guide you.

John Piper offers the following suggestions that I believe will offer encouragement to you and others seeking a deeper prayer life with God.  Read his short article by clicking on this link: "How to Pray for Half-an-Hour.

I include the Book of Psalms in my daily prayers.  They help teach us how to pray.  For more about how to pray the Psalms, click on these links:

Devote yourself to prayer to God, being persistent, watchful and thankful,

Colby
