All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Word about God

Many of us think bible is the word of God, but I think it is the word about God rather than word of God.

For example

Some books in the bible were written by a murderers who though God wanted to kill the enemies of Israelites. Just like the famous atheist Hitler who killed Jews saying "Jesus Killers". But later we see its recorded Jesus rebuking disciple for their wish to destroy a Samaritan village for not accepting them (Luke 9:51-56)

Some of the chapters were written by people in who's time slavery was not considered inhuman (1 Corinthians 7:22) they said, slaves should obey their masters. If you have a slave now you will be behind bars.

Some of them were written by people who thought  men can get married multiple times by divorcing their wives, Jesus rebukes them in (Matthew 19:3-9)

Some of them were written by people who thought Jesus will come back within days (1 Corinthians 7:29, 15:51)

Some of the books were written by prisoners.

Some of the books were written as poem whose literal meaning should not be considered as Truth, rather than it should be considered as a metaphor

Some of the idioms also should not be considered as God's word, but should be researched to find the right meaning.

When people wrote bible they made human errors in writing.

Apart from this there are translation mistakes, editor's mistakes etc.

If I open my bible, I will not get answer for the following questions

For example:

Is it right to have a Facebook account?

Is it right to watch Television?

How to drive a modern aircraft is not in the bible

When the doctor says I can save only the mother or only the child during childbirth, I cannot go ahead and find the right answer in bible.

Showing bible to devil or an animal or a monster may be a good idea in movies, but I would not expect the same graphics happen in real life. Bible will not tell me the name of the girl I will marry or the right course I need to join to fit exactly into God’s plan.

Just by reading the bible or telling the name of God mentioned in the bible a hundred or thousand times will not become a magic to control God and get the blessings needed.

In short Bible is not God or the direct word of God. Rather it is the word about the Holy God written by many different people in different situations.

So bible is not God, but I respect bible because it teaches me how to live & how not to live through the stories of different people in the bible.  But after reading bible I need to have a personnel relationship with the creator to know the path I need to take for my life. Because God is God; not the bible. Still it’s Holy because it talks about the Loving, Forgiving, Righteous, Peaceful, and Holy God.

Greetings,

Your approach to the Word of God is that of a liberal stand point. It takes the Word of God and attempts to turn into nothing more than the word of man. If this is the case, which it is not, then we would have no hope. The reason we would have no hope is that the very instrument that God uses to reach us would no longer be trustworthy. If it is not trustworthy, then we cannot be sure about God or salvation. I will attempt to put your mind at ease, trusting God to guide me in this endeavor.

Word about God

Many of us think bible is the word of God, but I think it is the word about God rather than word of God.

That is not what Scripture says about itself. 2 Timothy 3:16 clearly states that the Scriptures are God breathed. This means that the very words recorded are exactly the words given to the human author. Paul, when writing this was applying it to the Old Testament and New Testament as we know them, which included his own letters. This is no different than when the prophets of old spoke as the Holy Spirit guided them. When they spoke, they spoke the very words of God. Now this only applies to when God was speaking through them. They were men and lived life day to day just like you and me. They were not perfect as men, but perfect when used of God to speak His message. The same is true of the authors.

One action was the will of a holy, righteous and just God. The other action was founded in human desire. Joshua was instructed to carry out God’s orders. The expulsion of the nations that were in the promise land was twofold. God promised the land to the Abraham and his seed and God was judging the nations that lived there due to their wickedness (Deut. 9:4-5). The time was right for both to come to pass. Thus Joshua acted in righteousness as designed by God and not in sin. Therefore, he cannot be viewed as a Hitler by any stretch of the imagination.

Some of the chapters were written by people in who's time slavery was not considered inhuman (1 Corinthians 7:22) they said, slaves should obey their masters. If you have a slave now you will be behind bars.

It is helpful to understand slavery as it was viewed in Bible times and specifically as it related to the Jews and their authority over slaves in their houses. The following link will take you to an article on this subject. http://www.gotquestions.org/Bible-slavery.html

Some of them were written by people who thought men can get married multiple times by divorcing their wives, Jesus rebukes them in (Matthew 19:3-9)

Which author of the New Testament had multiple wives? If you are really interested in getting answers to your questions here is another link to help you regarding this specific one http://www.gotquestions.org/polygamy.html

Some of them were written by people who thought Jesus will come back within days (1 Corinthians 7:29, 15:51)

Man having limited insight to future events does not negate the authority of God’s Word. The Bible tells us that only the Father knows the day.

Some of the books were written by prisoners.

Many have been imprisoned through the years who were innocent. Others were guilty and have found Christ and have been used by Him for His glory. That is part of the redemption story. God takes the broken and makes it right. Of those, like Paul, who were imprisoned and went on to be used of God to write part of the Bible even while in prison, what were their crimes that they were in prison for that would cause them to be unusable by God to write a portion of the Word of God?

Some of the books were written as poem whose literal meaning should not be considered as Truth, rather than it should be considered as a metaphor.

Many of us read the Word of God at face value. If it is a poem, we read it as a poem. If it is an allegory we read it as an allegoric writing. The basic meaning of any of these is found by comparing Scripture with Scripture.

Some of the idioms also should not be considered as God's word, but should be researched to find the right meaning.

Why? How does man’s understanding add to or take away from what God has stated? The best method for interpreting Scripture is by comparing it with Scripture.

When people wrote bible they made human errors in writing.

This is assumed because you believe man is the author instead of the Holy Spirit through man. The simple answer here is for you to find one item that is an error. We are not talking about variations between translations, but in the base text.

Apart from this there are translation mistakes, editor's mistakes etc.

All credible versions of the Bible agree with each other on prime doctrine. Variations occur in simple grammar issues and do not change the basic meaning of the text.

If I open my bible, I will not get answer for the following questions

If you ask the right questions regarding these questions you will know if this is acceptable to Him.

For example:

Note: it is not the Bible’s purpose to tell you the specific answer to some of the things you ask, but it will tell you how to go about it. (I.e. God will not reveal in His Word the name of the girl you will marry, but He will tell you what type of girl you should marry and the type you are not to marry.)

Is it right to have a Facebook account?

Does having a Facebook account glorify Him? The real question is to determine how you are using the account. Are you sharing the Lord and setting a good example or acting like the world?

Is it right to watch Television?

Television can be edifying or detrimental. It all depends on what programs you watch. God has used TV to reach millions through various ministries. The enemy has also hurt people by the type of shows broadcast.

How to drive a modern aircraft is not in the bible

Does the Bible give any clue as to why something such as this would not be acceptable to Him? No. Yet, we can know how to use the aircraft the right way. Many missionaries and supplies have been flown into remote parts of the world and the gospel shared with people coming to know Jesus as their Savior.

When the doctor says I can save only the mother or only the child during childbirth, I cannot go ahead and find the right answer in bible.

To abort a child is murder. To kill a child to save a mother is still killing the child. There are times you simply must do the right thing and trust God for the outcome.

Showing bible to devil or an animal or a monster may be a good idea in movies, but I would not expect the same graphics happen in real life. Bible will not tell me the name of the girl I will marry or the right course I need to join to fit exactly into God’s plan.

Yeah, I would not want what happens in the movies to take place unless they are reenacting the Word of God on screen. I simply want what God does to take place. We know that Jesus used the Word of God three times when He was confronted by Satan in the wilderness.

Just by reading the bible or telling the name of God mentioned in the bible a hundred or thousand times will not become a magic to control God and get the blessings needed.

The Bible does not teach that, so you are right. It will not work like magic because it is not supposed to.

In short Bible is not God or the direct word of God. Rather it is the word about the Holy God written by many different people in different situations.

The Bible is not God, that is true. The Bible is not to be worshiped. The Bible is the Word of God and not just a word about God.

If you believe the Bible is written by man and is corrupt, how can you trust it at all? If it is corrupt, how do you know that Jesus is the Lamb of God who died on the cross for your sins?

Please let me know if my idea is right or wrong? Please let me know your inputs

Do you understand the Biblical definition of holy? Can you call it holy and corrupt at the same time? The answer is no. It is one or the other. We recognize it as His Holy Word.

Lord Bless,

Answer Seeker,

I am pleased that the response was helpful to you!

I am content to leave it up as posted. I think it is a good discussion. I will take it down at your request since you posted the discussion, but really hope you will desire to keep it up.

Lord Bless,

LT

Thank you, LT and Answer Seeker, for a great discussion!

In short, there are three possible answers.

1)  The Bible is the reliable and authoritative word of God, written by human authors inspired by God, which reveals God's plan for our salvation and is timeless and universal in its application.

2)  The Bible is a collection of writings by men in ancient times in which they share THEIR understanding of God.  Much of what they wrote is time-bound and culture-bound; of historical interest, but not necessarily relevant to us today.

3)  Some of its writings are divinely-inspired and a reliable witness to God.  Other writings are nothing more than the author's opinion. (If so, trying to sort of which is which would be a daunting task, leaving the Bible unreliable).

I hold to the first (a high view of Scripture) for reasons already thoroughly documented by LT.  Otherwise, the Bible becomes little more than a collection of fairy tales, albeit with a good moral.

Grace, peace and blessings,

Colby

Colby,

Good word.

Lord Bless,

Amen Colby

>>If I open my bible, I will not get answer for the following questions

For example:

Is it right to have a Facebook account?

Is it right to watch Television?

How to drive a modern aircraft is not in the bible.

Every question you can ever come up with, the Word of God deals with. Either in generality, by giving you principals that can apply to it, as parameters or by giving you direct detailed answers.

1 Corinthians 10:23

New International Version (©1984)
"Everything is permissible"--but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible"--but not everything is constructive.

1 Corinthians 6:12 "Everything is permissible for me"--but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me"--but I will not be mastered by anything.

Romans 14:19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.

The "everything" in the verses above is not referring to sinful actions, but to actions such as: what we eat, who we marry (as long as we are equally yoked), and what career we choose etc...

The bible, the word of God, will speak to you personally, as the Holy Spirit makes the word come alive in your life, when you abide in it. You will then know if a facebook account is the wise thing for you to do or not.

LOLOL. David, you be sure next time to see if your reply is sensible.
