All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Saved in a Baptist church.  (Twice)  Once at 11 years old and then much later at age 40.

Left there and joined an Assembly of God and learned all about the Pentecostal ways.

Then,  after a very rocky experience, left that church after 3 years and "wandered" to many other churches trying to find my place.

Today, I am back in the small town church (Baptist) where I was saved.

I consider myself first and foremost a Christian and not a denomination.

However, I still think Pentecostal and Baptist denominations (although different) are in many ways very much alike (with the exception of speaking in tongues..ha ha!)

Does it make sense that I still don't consider myself a denomination but rather a Christian?

Is there anything wrong with this mindset or am I completely crazy?

Michelle,

We are defined by Christ and not the flavor of church we choose to fellowship and serve through. The key to any is not their differences, but rather their focus, particularly in relation to Jesus. I serve through a denomination, but Jesus alone is my Savior and I strive to introduce people to Jesus and for them to become His disciple.

Lord Bless,

I'm a Christian by confession & non-denominational by conviction. Regardless of the name on the sign, the Name imprinted on my heart is Jesus. People tend to join the church that most closely relates to their beliefs. Some have been born in their current church & will be loyal for life.  Others "shop" around until they feel at home or when the Lord lays it on their heart that they are home. From the few sentences that I've read isn't enough for me to diagnose you as crazy but what you've said makes complete sense. lol

Christine,

OK? I guess? I'm not sure I understand but I'm sure it is good.

Or we're just both crazy & don't know the difference

How many _________ does it take to change a light bulb?

1. Charismatics? Only one since his/her hands are always in the air anyway.

2. Presbyterians? None. God has predestined when the lights will be on and off.

3. Baptists? CHANGE???????

4. Pentecostals? Ten. One to change the bulb and nine to pray against the spirit of darkness.

5. Catholics? None. They always use candles.

6. Episcopalians? Ten. One to actually change the bulb, and nine to say how much they liked the old one.

7. Church of Christ? None. There's no evidence that light bulbs were ever changed in New Testament times.

8. United Methodists? We choose not to make a statement either in favor of or against the need for a light bulb. However, if in your own journey you have found that light bulb works for you, that is fine. You are invited to write a poem or compose a modern dance about your personal relationship to your light bulb and present it next month at our annual light bulb Sunday service, in which we will explore a number of light bulb traditions, including incandescent, fluorescent, three-way, long-life, and tinted, all of which are equally valid paths to luminescence through Jesus Christ

I was saved and filled with the Holy Spirit in a Catholic Church at 15.   Then that stopped.  And, I could not go back knowing all I had been shown.  I've had many experiences over all these years now.  Some good others not so.  But, as we see and know Jesus as Lord and Savior, then no matter what the sign say on the outside of the building.  As long as the Love of the Lord rules then, all is good in my thinking.  I do though Love a good Holy Ghost throw down, blowing the roof off and shaking the foundation.  Praise God.

Faith is a personal journey, where one looks to find his/her identity in Christ.

I was raised and saved in a Baptist church in my youth; later I attended Pentecostal churches and learned to speak in tongues; today I attend a Congregational church. From my perspective, denominations are irrelevant since Christ never suffered from an identity crisis - we're not supposed to pick and choose selective passages from The Word, but believe and apply the whole Bible to one's life.
