Most likely Mary informed our Lord of the situation, because the master of the ceremony would be put to shame by running out of wine and Mary informed Jesus hoping (maybe) that He would say some words that would alleviate the shame and/or his words would keep people from leaving.

The people getting married were most likely close friends or relatives of them. The fact that they had pots for the cleansing ceremonies tell us that they were devoted Jews.

Jesus used a title for Mary (woman) which was not at all disrespectful, but did by it create some distance between her and himself, as to say: woman I am God and I do as I please when the right time comes. This was necessary in view of human tendency to exult those God uses. People still fell into worship of Mary though Christ did what was necessary for that not to happen.

What I was thinking was, how typical there relationship appeared to be.  We know of the Holiness yet, here we see a Mother who saw a problem, and believed her Son could take care of it.  Even after Jesus asked her, "what was He to do?" She just told others," to do whatever He tells them to do."   A situation most of us have been in I'm sure.  I also think the subject of who Jesus really was/is, came up many times.  Curious to know what others think.

What gets me in this story is that Mary did not ask Jesus to make more wine, she was simply, as you said, in a situation most of us have been in, a mother runs to her kid(s) for help as a kid also runs to his parents. Jesus however does the unexpected as usual; He is so beautiful, perfect and beyond us. The perfect teacher, son and friend. There are many angles to the story.

 

Mary knew Jesus was her Lord, the messiah, God with us, the savior of the world. He was perfect, so she did not have to correct him much, I would imagine, but she was his mother. What a beautiful God we serve. He incarnated and dwelt among us.

Interesting thought Chris,  wouldn't it be marvelous to be privy to all they spoke about. . and indeed His brothers and sisters, How wonderful that Jesus came and was raised in a family unit.

When Jesus was at the temple as His earthly parents traveled home, He had made His calling sure. At that time He knew that He was dedicated to the work of His Father. And His parents soon realized it. He is preparing for His ministry even at that early age. This is the way He reminded His earthly parents.

At the wedding feast, Mary was asking her son about wine. The use of the title *woman* is an indication that Mary was thinking about the current needs and not of eternal needs. It shows us that He is preparing to take His place as the Son of God. When Mary and His family asked to see Him at the temple, the disciples said the His mother and brothers were wanting to see Him. His response was, "who are my mother and brothers?" The ones who do the will of my Father.

He turned the water into wine because his mother showed belief that He could *fix it*. His ministry began publicly when He was baptized and received the power of the Holy Spirit.

Turning water into wine was accomplished because He believed that it would be done.

Great questions Chris.

Sounds like Jesus may have talked with Mary about his miraculous powers? Or maybe Mary, knowing who she gave birth to would have expected him to do miracles - as the prophets in the OT did? Maybe Mary wanted to "show off" that her son could perform miracles and put Jesus on the spot - and told the servants "do whatever he tells you" despite Jesus saying his time had not yet come? His time had not yet come for what? His first miracle?

I'm sure the family would have talked about Jesus at some stage considering all the publicity that he got during his ministry and no doubt heard about his miracles.

I too would be interested in others opinions.
