Dear Robert, I was raised Catholic and sang in a church choir for 20 years. My Sister and her husband are Jehovah Witness. My brother was a Jehovah Witness but left that group several years ago. My Brother and Sister had terrible experiences with Catholic Priests and Nuns. They were lied to by them and mistreated. I on the other hand had wonderful experience as a child with the Catholic Priests and Nuns that I came into contact with. Because of that as a young boy I thought of being a Maryknoll missionary at one time. That was not meant to be however. I can not say that growing up as a Catholic I was ever taught how much God wanted to know me as a person. I saw God as being "untouchable" and myself as being unworthy of his love. My parents great love for Jesus did strengthen me. Their belief in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit kept me active in the Catholic Church. I fell away from the church and God as I left home and joined the Military. I believe that all "religions" are man made. That they suffer from being guided by man's sinful nature to many times. I grew to have doubts about the "rules and dogmas" of the Catholic church. I saw myself as "hungry" instead of "fed" when I came from Church. The truth I came to see is the truth of Jesus Christ not the Catholic Church. Don't get me wrong I have many wonderful friends who are Catholic. I can only speak for myself when I say that leaving the Catholic church was not easy. But, I know that all things change and I knew Iwas growing as a Christian. Because of my desire to be closer to Jesus I read my Bible more and more. I too struggled with the praying to the statues. I realized that the statues were just symbols but as I read the Bible I realized error in this. The answer is creating a relationship with God. A real and beautiful connection with our Lord. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. Not a building or a particular priest. Jesus is our High Priest he came so that we could have life and enjoy it abundantly.
