All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

26 Then they sailed to the country of the Gadarenes,[a] which is opposite Galilee. 27 And when He stepped out on the land, there met Him a certain man from the city who had demons for a long time. And he wore no clothes,[b] nor did he live in a house but in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and with a loud voice said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me!” 29 For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had often seized him, and he was kept under guard, bound with chains and shackles; and he broke the bonds and was driven by the demon into the wilderness. 30 Jesus asked him, saying, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” because many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged Him that He would not command them to go out into the abyss. 32 Now a herd of many swine was feeding there on the mountain. So they begged Him that He would permit them to enter them. And He permitted them. 33 Then the demons went out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the lake and drowned. 34 When those who fed them saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country. 35 Then they went out to see what had happened, and came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. 36 They also who had seen it told them by what means he who had been demon-possessed was healed.37 Then the whole multitude of the surrounding region of the Gadarenes[c] asked Him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. And He got into the boat and returned. 38 Now the man from whom the demons had departed begged Him that he might be with Him. But Jesus sent him away, saying,39 “Return to your own house, and tell what great things God has done for you.” And he went his way and proclaimed throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him. So.....where did the demons go once the pigs ran off the cliff? If they were allowed to remain in their world of outer darkness to continue to do their work & not sent to their eternal destination at this particular time, did they go to indwell another person? And if yes, what was the purpose in casting them out of one person & allow them to enter another?

The story does not tell us what you ask and we can only speculate. We have what Jesus said about what happens when the unclean spirit is gone out of a man in Matthew 12:43-45. That's most likely the case. That's most likely why Jesus spent some "quality time" with the man afterwards, who was sitting at the feet of Jesus. We want to be "occupied" by the Holy Spirit.

The story does tell us a few things (well quite a bit) but I will point out what I see right away from a quick read of it. God is Sovereign over demons. Demonic forces are under God's control and act in ways that He will allow. We don't have to fear evil. When the Holy Spirit indwells us, we can trust in the truth of 1 John 4:4. Thinking that we must fear evil is a lie--we need to realize satan's defeat. Light will always conquer darkness.

Amen

Fallen angels like humans are given liberty to do what comes naturally to their fallen state, for now. It won't always be like that, but for a short time only. Even if human history, after the fall of Adam and Eve ends up being 20,000 or 50,000 years, that is but a blink of an eye in view of eternity. God restrains the evil that both fallen angels/demons and humans do, but He does not cast either one for now into the lake of fire until this age comes to an end.

Where did the demons/fallen angels go? Well, they went to wherever demons go. Is not normal for humans to be posses. Demons are allow to posses some and generally those who are posses either want it or are involve in witchcraft of some sort, but is not like demons can just be cast out and immediately posses another human. People have to be deeply involved in evil stuff for that to happen. There are those folks who are dedicated to the service of Satan, but that is another story and not common.  All this is only for a while. God is establishing eternal principals through it all. He is establishing His glory through his wrath upon sin. His holiness is demonstrated by his justice and his glory is also established by the Grace He gives creatures that are dead in trespasses and sins.

Thank you David

Jesus said:

Mt 12:43-45

43 "When an evil  spirit comes out of a man, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that man is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation."  NIV

It appears from this and Revelation 18:2 that demons seek desolate places in which to inhabit. However, the arid or desolate places do not give rest. It appears that demons prefer to indwell humans as animals would rather die than host demons.

In Isaiah 13:19, God makes Babylon as reported in Revelation uninhabitable. There, the demons will dwell with the jackals. A comparison of this verse with Revelation 18:2 and Jesus' words in Matthew 12 indicates that this is a preferred location for demons.

We are certainly not speaking of Kansas here. However, they will seek out people anywhere where they are willing to open themselves for habitation which is not normal as David mentions here.

Good question!

On second thought, though, it does get a little dry out in Western Kansas.

Thank you for your replies Roy. Isn't Kansas tornado country?

Yes it is. We had one just a mile from where I live just the other day. They are pretty common place here.

Kinda makes one think we could be caught up like Elijah; in a whirl wind. Huh?

Roy; I fell asleep during most of that storm. Lights went out, so I had nothing to do but sleep.

Joan and Cheryl, my daughter, were somewhere in western Ks. In a bowling tournament, and never felt or saw a drop of rain. Funny place, Kansas; good people, funny weather!

Joe

I LOVE KANSAS.
