All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

No one has seen God at any time, Jn 1:18. Who is the one appearing and speaking in the OT?

I still cannot understand. Iam reading the Bible, and the first question that Iam thinking is this, who is the one speaking to Adam and Eve? Who is appearing and speaking to the OT people and they recognized Him as God? AAG  friends thanks.

Well my friend  it is God. Because remember when you read John 1. It says In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  The Word which is God, has always been in the beginning. If you question it  I would recommend you read  Isaiah 45:14-25. It will let you know that there is no other God, and no was God made. It is still God, because his word would go to his prophets. If you want a close look at how God reveal himself to his servants look at  Exodus 3 and also God would use his servants ( like his Heavenly Angels to carry out his message ) before Jesus came in the flesh. I hope this help.If you have any more question I would try to help. God bless and I pray God will help you understand  in Jesus Name.

Thanks Tawny, I will read the passages you gave. As  I was reading the Bible and came to verses that says no one has seen God at anytime nor seen His form nor heard His voice. I thought  it talks about God the Father. Does it mean  that  Jesus God the Son is the one appearing and speaking in the OT?

Well at the time he is being known as God the Father because Jesus was not yet reveal in his human form but he was prophesy about with David, Isaiah and many others. He still God through and at the end of the bible. No worries. God will reveal himself to you. God bless ya

As it says in the beginning of John’s gospel: “No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known” (1:18).

I'll add the following from my point of view, based on my reading of the Holy Bible.  First and foremost, God, a spirit being, is invisible, according to the Holy Bible.

Though God is invisible, he looks like Jesus.  The Apostle Paul wrote in his letter to the Colossians, “In him [Jesus Christ] all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell” (1:19).

Returning to the Gospel of John, we learn that Jesus is the only perfect image of the Father.  In Jesus, God took on human form and lived among us.  Jesus shows us the nature of God.  “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. I and the Father are one” (14:9).

If you want to dig some more, here are two articles that may be helpful and of interest to you.

  1. CARM article, asks the question: "Has anyone seen God or not?"  It cites several Old Testament verses that say people have seen God and others that maintain no one has seen God.
  2. GotQuestions, a favorite source for many AAG contributors, poses and answers the same question.

When Christ was in front of their eyes, they despised and rejected Him. Rejecting Him is rejecting the Father. Rejecting the Father means you've never heard His voice.

John 5:37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form

They seen Jesus in the OT [Genesis 18 for ex.]. :0) In John 1:18 they're talking about the Father.

>>No one has seen God at any time, Jn 1:18. Who is the one appearing and speaking in the OT?

That remains true to today. No one has seen God in his Spirit form with their naked eyes. We have seen God the Father through Christ and Godly people around us.

From Got Questions.com :

A theophany is a manifestation of God in the Bible that is tangible to the human senses. In its most restrictive sense, it is a visible appearance of God in the Old Testament period, often, but not always, in human form. Some of the theophanies are found in these passages:

1. Genesis 12:7-9 – The Lord appeared to Abraham on his arrival in the land God had promised to him and his descendants

David makes the point clearly and succinctly.  There is no contradiction in the Scriptures.

God is an invisible spirit, according to the Bible.  Therefore, we can't see God.  (1 Timothy 1:17; Romans 1:20; Colossians 1:15).

However, two qualifications must be made to the above statement in accordance with the Holy Scriptures.

  1. The Old Testament speaks of God appearing to people in Old Testament times, to be sure; but, in doing so, he took on a form that was visible to people.  These appearances or representations of God are called theopanies.

  2. In the New Testament, God manifested himself to us in the person of Jesus Christ when he took on human form and lived and walked among us (Colossians 1:15; John 1:18; John 14:9).

When God says in Genesis 1:26, 'Let us make man in our image, in our likeness.....'

Sometimes I imagine that the other things created before man were created through a word or a command. This time round there was some physical work to be done ie forming the mud man. So physical hands had to employed. Mind you, the man had to be made in the image of his creator. A body, the image of another body. Now, we know God the Father is spirit. The other member of the trinity is the Holy Spirit. So the only member of the trinity who has ever had a body is Our Lord Jesus.

 Actually He created all things.

In the same line of thinking, and bearing in mind that His Name is 'Wonderful, Mighty God, Everlasting Father.......' ( Isaiah 9:6), then I conclude that it is the same Son, who, in the Name of the Father, used to appear to people during the old testament times.

Consider the story of Manoah in Judges 13 and the name He gave to Manoah in answer to his question in verse 18. The name was  'Wonderful'

No one has ever seen the Father for He is spirit (in nature). John 4:24. When Jesus refers to God here, it is the Father He refers to.

Thank you so much for your replies AAG  friends, Iam learning.

And Happy New Year to all.
