All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

I googled this question from Seek's discussion about ladies leading: The bible says women aren't to lead men but if men don't lead who will? This was the first article that popped up. Maybe you have heard about it but it came as a total shock to me.

JARS OF CLAY LEAD SAYS OF CHRISTIAN UPBRINGING: “I’M NOT THAT WAY NOW.”

guess I don’t really expect musicians in Christian rock bands to be theological leaders. We follow them for their music, not their biblical literacy. Although at some point we do expect them to act like Christains, especially since they claim in their marketing to be one of us.

So when Jars of Clay frontman Dan Haseltine tweeted support of gay marriage yesterday, fans who expressed disappointment were called haters. In tweet after tweet these past two days, Haseltine doubled-down on his position:

Metro Weekly reported the story this morning, which quickly went viral:

“Not meaning to stir things up BUT… is there a non-speculative or non ‘slippery slope’ reason why gays shouldn’t marry? I don’t hear one.” He went on to write “I’m trying to make sense of the conservative argument. But it doesn’t hold up to basic scrutiny. Feels akin to women’s suffrage. I just don’t see a negative effect to allowing gay marriage. No societal breakdown, no war on traditional marriage. ?? Anyone?”

For many fans, this is all quite new and upsetting. Dan Haseltine is a Christian who has a Christian band playing for Christian churches and youth groups, so naturally we are heartbroken that he is shaking his fist in Jesus’ face. When did Dan depart from truth? Apparently he has been “out” about his beliefs – or rather about walking away from them – for quite a while. In a blog he wrote about his new album two summers ago, he’s pretty clear about what he no longer believes:

…since the themes of the record are very far from evangelical Christianity, the church community will most likely not embrace this record.  Which, on one hand, is a relief.  I am pretty weary from years of pretending to be more of something than I am.  I am tired of carrying evangelical expectations on my shoulders.  I have never been so sure of my faith that I was able to find a true home in the church communities where we played most of our shows.

Our particular style of writing and the perspective that we have written from has not been an easy fit into an artistic community that has such a massive agenda and only a single idea of how that agenda gets accomplished.  I don’t fit there.  I may have at one point.  I did grow up as a youth group kid wearing a t-shirt with a picture of Jesus on it.  I did drive a car with a “Christian” bumper sticker on it.  And at one point, I was sure of who God was, and how God operated.  But I am not that way now.  And so it is impossible to write from that old version of myself. I am in the middle space.

I was aware of this. It goes to the point of when we minimize God's Word, use human arguments and evaluate things in light of the society around us .... well, here is an example of what is possible when humans attempt to take charge.

Amen

I'm not very fond of the Christian/secular bands.  And I call them that, because many times you can't tell the difference, the marketings the same, the bands look the same, and the message the same, i.e. I, me, I, me.  Most of them seem like a bunch of jingles meant to draw people...and money to themselves.  Very little is Biblically sound and about God.

Sorry, don't mean to be so blunt, but I am extremely saddened by this.  Does he have any idea what he's giving away?  It makes me cry to think of it.

"Tis sad. Makes you think all he ever did was play the game called religion. One day we can hope He meets Jesus.

I do hope this and know that if God can change me, He can change anybody, anywhere they are at.

I did grow up as a youth group kid wearing a t-shirt with a picture of Jesus on it.  I did drive a car with a “Christian” bumper sticker on it.

And this statement just well.....all I can say is WOW, what a truly disjointed view of Jesus he had.

I couldn't do that even as a youth. I knew my actions were wrong & I wasn't bringing Jesus into it.

And at one point, I was sure of who God was, and how God operated. But I am not that way now.

Hebrews 6:4-6

For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

I'm so thankful I've never heard of this group.  This is one area of the Bible that I don't even see any qualifiers or caveats for.  There is no place that homosexuality was permitted in scripture, regardless of anything.  And I cannot figure out how anyone gets past that point and still claims they're serving God.  It is true that one can be homosexual and turn to Christ and then they have an addiction per se that they need set free of and are to try and refrain from it.  That's not the same as saying, I'm gay and it's ok, Christ forgives me anyway.

So, I'm on my way home from work tonight...and I hear this advertisement about some big huge Christian concert they are having and they had a caller who called in to say, "I love these singers, they are all my favorites, I can't wait to see them."

I really don't believe that I need to say anything more about that comment, it speaks volumes about Christianity today.

I believe everyone has a type of musical sound they prefer but when it's the band that is the idol rather than the worship it's time to shut the music off and spend time with God.

I went to Winterfest a few years ago. I've had people try and get me to go again. I was introduced to Dave Crowder for the first time there and loved his music. And I waited all night to see Kutless, the last act. I love the music style and words of many of their songs. But sadly it wasn't enough to cause me to desire to try it again. For the most part, there was a good message. But I saw people so easily lift their hands like they're praising God but all they were doing was seeing a rock concert. Seeing, and hearing, "Red" for the first time literally scared the h e double toothpicks out of me. For a band that says they're Christian based, they seem to use a lot of satanic fire displays. And the music? I know that's what they call it, but I was thanking God I had earplugs. ;-)

And when the band stands for one thing & totally lives another, there's a HUGE problem. If I want to listen to just good music & know they live what they sing, I'll turn on Boston or AD/DC.

Uhhh AD/DC? Never heard of em.

Maybe I was higher then you back in the day
