All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

I have an interview Friday for an investigator position for a paranormal society group in my area. How does that play in with Christianity? I've been fascinated with the paranormal since I've been little. I feel like it would be really awesome to help alleviate families who are being haunted by unseen forces and to help bring their lives back to normalcy. I wouldn't be playing with a ouija board or anything like that. I'm not interested in dealing with demonic spirits and I understand the severity of dabbling in such things. I do not, however, believe that all spirits are demonic. Any thoughts?

Yeah, I'll have to do that. It's not a paying job though. It'd be more of a hobby except we'll be doing real cases.

Kayla,

This is very dangerous territory you are considering embarking on. You may go on rabbit trails that lead to nothing (unfounded oddities), but then there is the day you may come across an actual demon. This is not to be taken lightly. We have recorded in Scripture (Acts 19) the account of the Seven Sons of Sceva. They thought they were dealing with demons and casting them out. Then one day they met the real deal and the following is recorded for us:

AC 19:13Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, "In the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out." 14 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15 One day the evil spirit answered them, "Jesus I know, and I know about Paul, but who are you?" 16 Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.

In the spiritual realm there are only two types of beings. Those of the light and those of darkness. Those of the light are not going to be busy haunting houses.

If you do not have the calling from God, do not try it. I have personally visited hauntings and how these evil sprits are casted out from humans or even when they possesss a particular place. Its nothing exciting. Also, I very much believe that when someone dies, the spirit is taken for judgment, good end up in heaven and bad in hell. All these evil spirits are the faces of the demons.
Yeah, I honestly don't find anything wrong with it. I will pray about it, but I haven't felt anything from God as far as it being negative. I just wanted to know what others thought since it's a controversial subject. Not only would you be alleviating families who can't feel safe in their own home, but you would also be debunking so called "hauntings." I look at it as being able to help bring normalcy back to someone's life. Even if I don't take the position, I'll always have that innate fascination with the unknown. I always have. I just thought it would be neat to be able to help people...people who aren't so fascinated with it and people who are frightened. I think it becomes dangerous when you underestimate diabolical spirits and when you underestimate the power of a ouija board. It becomes dangerous when you practice certain things and when you actually provoke a spirit. We wouldn't be playing with any ouija board or sitting around a pentagram.

Dear Kayla,

you are opening yourself up to very dangerous possibilities here.  I recommend running fast in the opposite direction.  I am not saying these things from a place of fear.  My discernment comes from your words here

"I'll always have that innate fascination with the unknown. I always have."

It sounds like this is something you are doing for you.  As a believer our works are to be for God and His Glory.

It is wonderful to help people..  if you really want to help them tell them about Jesus..  point them to the Saviour who can free them.  There are no 'good' spirits. When people die their spirit and soul leaves the earth..  the saved join the Lord immediately, the unsaved go to hell.  The 'hauntings' that you speak of are demons..  do not take this lightly.

You are on dangerous ground.

Blessings, Carla

Might I offer a suggestion. I would suggest helping out in a womans shelter. Ministering to the needs of women and children who are escaping from the "demons" in their lives. Perhaps you would find that much more rewarding and helpful. Still you would be offering your support as a volunteer and I think the rewards are much greater.

your friend and Brother in Christ,

journeyman

This is a wonderful suggestion.. :-)

Wouldn't I need a degree to do that?

Hi Kayla..  not at all..  you wouldn't be counselling them..  just hanging out with them and encouraging them.  You could call the local womens shelter and find out how to go about it.  You would have to ask if they allow you to talk about Jesus..if they are not a Christian extablishment they may have clear guidelines against that..  however, you would be able to 'love on them'..  extend the Love of our Saviour to them.  Ask God to open doors in this regard...and if the opportunity arises that they ask you about your faith, i think then it is ok to share it with them..  This is likely different for each womens shelter, a good way to find out would be to call and ask.  Blessings, Carla
I'm not sure if I could talk to them about God because I'm still figuring out where I stand myself. I'll give them a call though...I'm still going to go along with the investigator position unless I get a strong feeling not to....

Kayla,

May I encourage to not trust your feelings, but seek what the Word says regarding spiritual truth. Feelings will fool us and/or fail us from time to time.
