All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Hi Everyone,

During my bible study yesterday we were studying this parable:

Parable of the Marriage Feast

1Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying,

2"A)'>(A)The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a B)'>(B)wedding feast for his son.

3"And he C)'>(C)sent out his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding feast, and they were unwilling to come.

4"Again he D)'>(D)sent out other slaves saying, 'Tell those who have been invited, "Behold, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and my fattened livestock are all butchered and everything is ready; come to the wedding feast."'

5"But they paid no attention and went their way, one to his own farm, another to his business,

6and the rest seized his slaves and mistreated them and killed them.

7"But the king was enraged, and he sent his armies and destroyed those murderers and set their city on fire.

8"Then he said to his slaves, 'The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy.

9'Go therefore to E)'>(E)the main highways, and as many as you find there, invite to the wedding feast.'

10"Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered together all they found, both evil and good; and the wedding hall was filled with dinner guests.

11"But when the king came in to look over the dinner guests, he saw F)'>(F)a man there who was not dressed in wedding clothes,

12and he said to him, 'G)'>(G)Friend, how did you come in here without wedding clothes?' And the man was speechless.

13"Then the king said to the servants, 'Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into H)'>(H)the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

14"For many are I)'>(I)called, but few are J)'>(J)chosen."

Who is this man?

Carla,

This is a story. As a story it is not recorded as an actual event, but rather is given to teach principles.

The man is an unsaved person. The emphasis is not on the fact that he is there, but rather the fact that without having received an invitation and accepting that invitation he will not be able to partake of the wedding banquet. He is without the required wedding clothes.

All people will come before God one day, but only the saved will remain. I like the statement "all roads eventually lead to God, but only one keeps you there."

MT 7:13-14 (NIV) "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

PHP 2:9-11 (NIV) Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

REV 20:11-15 (NIV) Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Carla, this is very thought provoking. Thank you for submitting the question.

In short, the rule of direct interpretation is to review Jesus' own statement and answer that the man is someone who was called but not chosen.

There are many implications of that statement, which ultimately demands that the reader makes a decision to answer the call. The greater question, I think, then comes: what is the call, who is it from and does that call (has that call) come to me?
Jesus knows those who are His. I think there are many implications. I think one is that how obvious it will be to our Lord who belongs and who doesn't. There is only one way to get the right clothes on and that is through His grace. It was very obvious to the Lord that this guy didn't belong. On that day I think everything will be very obvious. We don't want to be found in our own works for they will not be enough.

I thought it interesting as well by His comment that He went out to call both the evil and good. Who are the good? I think this does give us some latitude in our efforts to get more into the fold.

Great question, Carla.

Thanks Cala.
I frequently see discussions on the "elect" and only they are called. However, this parable confirms in my mind that although many aren't chosen, all are called.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for all your responses...
We were learning that in Jewish tradition it is customary for the wedding host to provide the garment for the guests. The garment for us as believers is the 'Righteousness of Christ'. Jesus provides that for us on our salvation. My question is.. How did this guy even get in to the feast in the first place. Why is he there?
One of the girls from my group brought up an interesting thought on this parable.
She put out the possibility that it is the anti-Christ. I don't know about that...it's a thought that she raised.

My study bible cross-references Matt 22:12 with Matt 26:50
Mat 26:50 And Jesus said to him, "Friend, do what you have come for." Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him.
and Matt 20:13
Mat 20:13 "But he answered and said to one of them, 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius?

In the first example Matt 26:50 Jesus is being betrayed by Judas.
In the second example Matt 20:13 this person is questioning God's Grace on Salvation, and God's generosity. He is saying it is unfair that God may save some at the last moment of their lives.. This shows a jealousy in the persons heart and a lack of understanding that God is Gracious and Forgiving. We must be thankful always.

So..how did this person get into the feast? Does this person represent all those who rely on a 'works' salvation? But..why are they there in the first place?

I think we need to ask:
When does the wedding feast occur? Is it afer the bema judgement or before?
If the White Throne Judgement has already occured...why is this person there? Has the White Throne Judgement already occured at the point of the wedding feast?

I don't think this has anything to do with the 'election or non-election' of people.. I don't even want to go there with this conversation if we can avoid it...unless it is applicable.

Thinking, Praying and Studying on this one..
Blessings, Carla

Hi Clare,

Thank you for reaching out to ask for help.
Since you are looking for a 'catholic bible study' specifically, you may have more success going to your local priest at your catholic church.

You may also want to try BSF.. Bible Study Fellowship.. But they are not specifically Catholic.. although I do have some Catholic friends who have done these studies.

Blessings, Carla
thank you carla i have a passion for learning how to pray the bible i have a book which is a study and reflection guide, thats is a good book but it only covers 9 books in the bible, im studying corinthians at the minute. when i go to church and the readings are letters from st. Paul to the corinthians, i have always wondered where the readings are in the bible, now i know. i do enjoy them,
i think i understand though im not too sure, being baptised catholic i learned my catechism in and out but reading the bible isnt an obligation.
Hi Angels,
You are correct in stating that the Bible isn't an obligation..... however
The Bible is the most fascinating book there is. It never gets boring, it never is out of date and it is filled with promises to the believer. Please give it a try. There are many versions of the Bible out there, printed in a manner that it can be understood but with the same information in each one. My primary Bible is ESV Study Bible but that isn't the only literal translation. Give it a try. You will be amazed with what it holds and amazed that it is actually talking to you and about you. Obligation...no---necessity...YES!!!

BLessings to you,
Rita
thanks rita, correct me if im wrong, corinthians is a letter from saint paul, proverbs is how you should be leading your life in at Jesus footsteps?? job is when God and Satan put one of Gods followers to the test, anyone know what the others are about would you please tell me
love clare
I thank you first and foremost for asking this question. I believe we are all invited to attend but also take part in a wedding. To play a role as a believer in The Christ. In scripture the wedding or marraige is vital to a true Christian walk. We we take that first step down the isle ,the asile to everlasting life . So God takes this step very serious and so should us all. This man seems to me was not in right standing with God therefore he shouldnt be fooled by his intentions. My hope is that he allows Christ to touch him directly , allow God to be God. I wonder what ever happened in this mans life, the rest of it i mean. Was he able to see the face of Christ later in his life. hey, wouldnt it be awesome if we found out later that that man attended another wedding , a wedding where he was dressed to a tee ,and im not speaking of his outer cloths but his inner cloths , his heart wrapped with fine linens so when he showed up Jesus invited him to walk with Him down the isle and he became married to Jesus for the rest of his life. Amen
