All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

"And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing. Then Pilate said to him, 'Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?' But He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled." (Matthew 27:12-14)

Why do you think Jesus did not answer? What might He have been doing, instead, while He was being quiet?

Hi William,

Jesus was fulfiling the prophecy spoken by the prophet Isaiah in chapter 53:

Isa 53:7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth.

Hi, Carla . . . that is right. It does say Jesus would be "silent before" His shearers. He is the "Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world," by the way, as John the Baptist said, in John 1:29.
I believe that Jesus knew what God had in mind, and that God's plan is perfect. Jesus also knew that He was to be crucified on the cross, and that no matter what He said, the Jews were going to have Him crucified anyway.
Jesus is God. God the Son. He came willingly. He set his glory aside and humbles himself. No one took anything from Him; no one killed him without Him allowing it. He was silent to fulfill the prophecy but also because He was not only humanly driven, by mere human emotions. He was fully God getting ready to die for His creation. He knew exactly what He was doing and the time was at hand.

The anguished a holy God had showed at the garden, as He prayed to the Father was real, the anguished of holiness at the face of sin. The physical torture was not what He feared, but the sin that would be placed upon Him and the wrath of the father were heavy loads to carry.

However before His accusers, His holy nature controlled the human side and He was quite beyond his creation. A creation He could wipe of the face of the earth as we can easily wipe ants of a table. His love is certainly amazing. His commitment to save His creation is astonishing.

There is a time for everything under heaven and there is a time for us as well to be silent before our accusers and be still and know that God is God. Our divine nature (the Holy Spirit in us) can help us achieved and experience such spiritual maturity and peace.

Psalm 46:10 (New International Version)

10 "Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth."
