All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Series #16:  The Holy Spirit

PENTECOSTAL LIFE - LESSON #12

Again in Samaria, the people were saved and baptized in water, yet the Holy Spirit had fallen on none of them.  In Acts 19:2, Paul asked a group of believers, "Have you received the Holy Ghost since you believed?"  The gift of the Holy Ghost was so real, believers were expected to know whether they had received it or not.  Pentecost is an experience.  It is NOT somebody teaching you how to say a few words that they call a prayer language.  It is a definite experience of God the Holy Ghost coming into you, and you into Him.

When you were born again, the Holy Spirit baptized you into Christ.  But when you were filled with the Holy Spirit, Christ baptized you in the Holy Ghost.  The latter is as definite as the former.

Ye shall know...ask... and do.  The promise of our Lord concerning the Holy Ghost gathers around the centers of knowledge, prayer and service.  First, He said, "Ye shall know" - that's knowledge.  Second, "Ye shall ask" - that's prayer.  Third, "Ye shall do" - that's work.  Knowledge, prayer and service.  Pentecost brings certainty in knowledge, assurance in prayer, and power in service.  Begin your day with God.  Seek Him early.  Make the first part of your day an altar.  There determine the will and course of God for that day.  By the Holy Spirit, you can know, you can pray, and you can do.

The fullness of the Holy Ghost brings the certainty of revelation to the heart.  The men of Pentecost knew the things of God.  No theological instruction could have given Peter the doctrine he preached concerning Christ's life, death and resurrection.  "At that day ye shall know..." (John 14:20), said Jesus, and when that day came, they knew.  They knew the essential relationship between Christ and God.  They knew the mysterious union between Christ and the believer.  They knew that Christ was in the believer as the Son was in the Father.  The Spirit filled believers know.  All questions are answered in the Holy Ghost.  He is the mind of God.  Being led of the Spirit is simply knowing the mind of God, knowing the thoughts of God.

The Pentecostal blessings makes the believer mighty in prayer.  "In that day ye shall ask me nothing...(What day?  The day the Holy Ghost comes)....Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in My Name, He will give it to you"  (John 16:23)  Prayer is an impossible task without the Holy Ghost.  We do not know what to pray for.  "...but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings that cannot be uttered."  (Romans 8:26)  Only the Spirit filled knows that kind of praying.  This is the kind of praying that wrought miracles in the book of Acts, pleads the Name, enthrones the Name, claims the Name.  It prays in His Will, presents His Promise, and decrees His Power.

The problem with all you have written here, is that we're not living in the first century AD. Very little of this applies today.
Fix,

I am enjoying our exchanges, but again will ask that you give us your scriptural references to back up your opinions. I know time is of an essence and is tedious work to do at times, but so these discussions can be enjoyed even more and we can get to the business of letting scripture interpret scriptures, it would be great to have your references.

Again, I cannot "prove" anything, so you must come to your own opinion on this by your own observation....but this is what I believe...others of course may see things differently. But I think on these forums we have the freedom to speak our minds, and to write what is in our hearts. I don't make comments here to to try and knock people down or discourage them, but just to try and seek out truth, And if I am wrong, or if I offend, I will acknowledge my erors and apologise.

I believe that the manifestation of the spiritula gifts such as "tongues" (which really means languages...refer to Pentecost) and (the gift of) healing, etc. was given only to the Apostles and the 1st century fledgling ekklesia...or church (meaning "called-out ones" and not a denomination). Acts 5:12 The apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders among the people

The laying-on of hands by the apostles passed on these spiritual gifts. Now...I do not limit God in any way, and I acknowedge that miraculous healnigs, for example, take place at any time in history...but this is not the same as a person who has the gift to heal others. Such as:
Acts 5:9
The feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out also.
The Apostles had the power of death as well healing.....who has this today?
Acts 5:15
so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them.
Even the shadow of Peter falling across sick people would heal them

That is the type of spiritual GIFT that was given in NT days. I do not believe these GIFTS are given to Christians now.

And.....in like manner , the experience received on that original day of Pentecost was unique, never to be repeated. No-one now sees any "flames of fire"....the prophecy of being "baptised by fire" again applied only to the apostles on the day of Penetcost. This is why I stated that the information which Michelle had written, applied in a specific way ONLY to the early church. Of course, there are principles which apply today, but the specifics do not

Is this sufficient? I can add more if you wish

Since we have been exchanging our thoughts and we are learning our hearts as we exchange, I am starting to feel comfortable sharing my thoughts and biblical doctrines with you without giving you a great deal of detail believing we understand that our intentions are not to be offensive but edifying, amen bro? Cool!

I encourage you to get to the point where you can prove your beliefs with the bible. Ephesians 4 tells us to come to the unity of the knowledge of Christ. In these Forums you will not be penalized for asking questions or bringing up any topic. Your attitude is exactly what we welcome here and thank you for sharing your perspective as to your intentions. You said:” I don't make comments here to try and knock people down or discourage them.”Awesome bro. Great attitude, a pleasure to have you with us.

1 Corinthians 14:18-19 (New King James Version)
18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all; 19 yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

I speak in tongues, so I believe different than you on this secondary issue. We have discussed the topic here in great length, so feel free to go back and resurrect those discussions.

Check out this discussion: http://www.allaboutgod.net/forum/topics/does-bible-consistently-sho...

Like Paul I to desire that everyone would speak in tongues because it edifies the inner man in very powerful ways. But like Paul, I know that not all will speak in tongues.

Thank you for sharing what you believe bro.
Based on John 20:22 I believe that the apostles received the Holy Spirit from Christ as he breathed on them. I think the rest received the Holy Spirit on Pentecost as well as the Baptism. As for today, I think one receives the Holy Spirit at the moment of salvation. However, I have to give credit to the idea that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit might come at a later time. One receives the Grace of God as one is saved. I think that grace is the Holy Spirit. I don't think that there is a probation period after salvation, but one receives that Holy Spirit immediately.
Hi Michelle,
I apologize. I never meant to imply that it wasn't real.

We receive the Holy Spirit....which is God Himself...when we believe that Yeshua was the Son of God. We believe only because God has chosen us at this time....it is His doing and not ours. "Baptism" of the Holy Spirit is excactly the same ocurrence, except worded differently in the metaphor of the practice of water baptism, in order to assist us in our understanding. Onve we receive Yeshua into our self (Colossians 1:27) we are one with God for all eternity
I know that the Pentecostal (Church of God) beliefs are that all will have the evidence of speaking in tongues. (This is based on the beliefs taught in the one I attended a number of years ago.)

To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually has he wills.
The Holy Bible : English Standard Version. Wheaton : Standard Bible Society, 2001, S. 1 Co 12:7-11

The above verses seem to refute that belief.

A more accurate statement on who has received the Holy Spirit is

3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit The Holy Bible : English Standard Version. Wheaton : Standard Bible Society, 2001, S. 1 Co 12:2-3
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
The Holy Bible : English Standard Version. Wheaton : Standard Bible Society, 2001, S. Ga 5:22-23

I believe that the displaying of the "fruit of the Spirit" is a strong indicator of who has the Holy Spirit and who has not.
Hey Michelle,

Do you support the "Evidence Doctrine" which is taught by AG (Fundemental Truth #8) or do you accept that there are other evidences of one being filled with the Spirit of God while the person may not speak in tongues?

Lord Bless,
LT
Michelle,

Thanks for answering my question. We disagree on this one issue regarding the Holy Spirit and whether one is filled or not based soley on the evidence of one speaking in tongues. This topic has been debated numerous times here on AAG and I will not try to duplicate all that has been previously said.

Your position tells everyone out there that unless they speak in tongues they are not filled with the Spirit of God (you call baptism, I call sanctified). I disagree, and believe Scripture disagrees, and will leave it at that.

BTW, the AG came into existence over this doctrine. They came out from The Christian and Missioanry Alliance in the early 1900s. The two groups base statement of faiths/fundemental truths are identical in scope except this one issue.

Lord Bless,
LT
Brother Charles,
I have seen some pretty amazing things over the last 20 years in the Pentacostal church but have seen things that were absolutely contrived as well. I will know my brothers and sisters by their fruit.
I think that all people should attend a Pentacostal church to be able to see how they "see" the Holy Spirit. I have never spoken in tongues but I have had 2 occasions when I understood what the translation should be. I have experienced being slain in the Spirit and have see others slain that didn't even see it coming.
I have seen people fake it as well. I saw a preacher immediately quiet a crying baby by banishing Satan. I have seen people roll on the floor making such a racket that one couldn't hear the sermon. (That I can do without.) I have laid hand on two or three people and "knew" they were going to be healed of any disease that they thought they had.

The Holy Spirit is where one can "see" Him if one seeks to "see" Him. Belief is the key. I have enjoyed "hearing you" state you opinions.

Blessings!
