All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

I watched an interview with a very controversial Baptist preacher. He was saying that the US government should operate under OT laws, and specifically that homosexuals should be executed.

He was saying that God's law is perfect, therefore governments should adopt His OT laws. He's particularly outspoken about the whole homosexual thing.

I was angry hearing him speak, especially because I have a brother who calls himself a homosexual, and I'm certain God would have me lovingly share the truth of sin and the gospel with him- not hand him in to be executed.

I believe because we are living under the new covenant, the OT laws are now to be understood and handled differently, however I'd like some help understanding and articulating this.

Thanks,

Jenny

Unfortunately he's had quite a bit of publicity claiming that all bible believing Christians would agree with him on this.

I agree with you Eric ... he is a fool.

Amen, Eric. According to Deuteronomy 17:12 refusing to obey a judge or a priest was grounds for execution. Many other things were, too, such as disobedience to parents or attacking and cursing a parent. Soon, no one would be left alive if we began practicing these laws in our society today. An example would be losing your driver's license for a DUI and being told by a judge not to drive on a suspended license but then getting caught doing so. Disobedience to the command, turning aside from the verdict, would then require the death penalty.

Hi Jenny,

I agree with the following statement...

I was angry hearing him speak, especially because I have a brother who calls himself a homosexual, and I'm certain God would have me lovingly share the truth of sin and the gospel with him- not hand him in to be executed.

The Word tells us to "speak the truth in love." (Ephesians 4:15) I find the following passage extremely helpful with understanding what the New Testament has to say about homosexuality.

9 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders

10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

(1 Corinthians 6:9-11, NIV)

Personally, I believe if the Body of Christ would begin to realize that sin is sin and there is only one sin God said He will not forgive, "blasphemy of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 12:31-32); that we could win more souls for Christ, which is our mission.

I hope this helps.

Lord's blessings,

Mischelle

11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Exactly.

Several things come to mind as we look at this comment.

1) While it is true that the Word of God declares that homosexual activity is sin, and we cannot give in to believe otherwise, we do not see anywhere in the NT written specifically to the church that we are to execute anyone. In fact I will give more on this in #3.

2) If we apply the logic of applying the OT law to the church for executing homosexuals we then would have to apply the law and execute adulterers, which again is declared as sin the Word of God. We must consider something ...

3) What is the purpose of the cross? If Jesus wanted all sinners executed (which included the whole of the human race) He could have destroyed heaven and earth instead of going to the cross. The Cross is the offer of forgiveness that brings new life and the indwelling Holy Spirit. Jesus died and rose again returning to heaven after giving the church its marching orders to share the gospel. Not everyone will accept Christ, it is not our responsibility to make them accept Christ. We are to "share the gospel, share the good news which includes acknowledgement of sin, repentance, and change of direction." While it is true that we are to stand for truth and must not call that which is sin not sin it is Holy Spirit's job to bring that conviction. The offer of salvation is open at this time, but a day is coming when that offer shall cease to be extended ... Jesus will return and all people will be judged. We will be judged in two ways. 1) Whether or not we have received Jesus and been transformed (new life) or did not receive Jesus and remained the the same ... born with a sin nature separated from God. 2) The child of God will be judged for rewards and the lost according to their sinful acts. A day is coming when Jesus will sort all this out ... in the meantime our goal is to present Jesus and in so doing we are being obedient to Him and honoring His work through the cross ... the work of redemption.

Lord Bless,

LT

Romans 2:1 comes to mind for me. This preacher and his church members all deserved to die physically for their sins and spiritually in Hell for their sins. None of us deserve heaven. But God was merciful! We were dead because of our sins, but God loved us so much he made us alive with Christ, and God's gift of undeserved grace is what saves you. ( Ephesians 2 : 4-5 CEVUS06)

We are told to love mercy and to be merciful as our heavenly Father is merciful. Luke 6:36-42. Micah 6:8.

It takes humility to recognize one isn't better than another person for any reason.

Amen Amanda!
