is it ok for a christian to listen to music in the secular world cos sometimes when i do , i get this warning nin my spirit that it conflicts with the spirit of god that is in me.someone said they get inspiration for those songs from the devil so listening to it makes me have a little of the spirit of satan in me.

Since we are human and not perfect our emotions and feelings get in the way although IMO these things are what makes us human. I get emotional and have good feelings whenever I talk to our Father or read the bible or donate time/money to a charitable cause. Somehow I don't think this is a 'bad' thing.

Many times, these types of choices are left up to us. God gives us the Holy Spirit to help us discern and choose wisely. There will be a conviction that comes that we are to pay attention to (obedience and surrender). This is a true test "Is Jesus really Lord of our lives?"
Sometimes God will remove something out of our lives for a season if it has become an idol... He may give it back to us as we learn to lean on Him rather than things of this world. Even Christian music can become an idol.. as the scriptures are an idol for the Jewish people.
God must come first... Then you will be certain in the choices you are making.
I believe this applies here.. The context is Jesus teaching us about worry...and commanding us to seek God first
Mat 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

My take on this belated as it may be is: 1) Anything that does not stem from faith is sin-so if the Holy Spirit nudges you away from secular music, you must be obedient. 2) Having said 1), there is a lot of music that would qualify as secular music that is trying to pass across some very important message for example, preserving the environment and being mindful of the needs of others say Melissa Etheridge's "Inconvenient Truth" that talks about the need to change our energy habits. You might not find such messages in what would normally be classified as gospel or spiritual music. I, PERSONALLY, think there's a case to be made for some music that is considered "secular" but let the Holy Spirit guide and lead you. Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit will teach us all things and indeed HE will, if we let HIM. In truth, as I am wont to agree, the more time we spend with HIM, the more we become like HIM. It is a physical and spiritual law but Jesus did spend time with tax collectors, renegades and outcasts. The fact is though we are not of the world, we do live in the world and we would hear music that would inspire us, sometimes depressing music. Let the Holy Spirit be our filter. God is in the most mundane and the most minute of our affairs and HE will lead and direct us if we ask HIM. NB: wasn't trying to write an epistle but your question is very pertinent and one that i have often strugged with since collge in OAU...You are blessed beyond reproach Dasola!

Music has always had an influence on me. It affects my mood, attitude & thus eventually helps influence my decisions. Satan was the angel of music. He definitely influences people through music.

I love UK Hardcore/rave music (as you can probably tell by user name); it's fast, hard, energizing, uplifting, usually played at the types of events where people take drugs. I state this as a matter of fact and with no shame. When I went to these events, I never took drugs, only drank water and had some of the best nights of my life.
Looking back, I have no regrets and still listen to that music today. I think there are many similarities between Christianity and the rave culture as well as the music being used as worship (see http://www.allaboutgod.net/profiles/blogs/dance-rejoice-and-just-ra...) I listen to the likes of Tim Hughes and Kim Walker but I also listen to Snow Patrol, Evanesence, Linkin Park. Their songs are usually about the world and it's issues and you can pick up some quite deep themes (listen to "Where is the love" by The Black Eyed Peas")
I think some Christians can get themselves in such a mess worrying about what music to listen to, what rules to follow etc. I know this idea has been dismissed but I follow my heart on these matters and since my heart follows Christ, I trust it. To a certain extent music is about what you make it. If it feels right, go with it and God will soon let you know if you're on the wrong path.

I am very familiar with some of the music you placed here: Linkin Park, Evanesence and The Black Eyed Peas, they are the music I listened to in a fallen state or a state of compromise to my Christian values. That music does not edify the Spirit man in any way, but brings anger, sadness etc... Where is the love by the Black Eyes Peas is ok, but the band has a whole bunch of dirty songs as well, so should we listen to such groups.
I have never liked raved music, is one of the only genres of music I dislike. I dislike it because it has the capacity as other genres have, to penetrate the soul of a person through the energy infused by the electronic sounds. When the theme is perverted, then the listeners are really infused by it and it tends to cultivate the use of drugs.

I agree there are some bands like the Peas that combine significant songs with trash....Nickleback is one they mix 'religious' tracks with insignificant stuff....Thats why you burn the significant songs and don't listen to the trash...I love Third Days music but there are a couple of insignificant tracks on there disc as well. Isn't there something about make a joyful noise in the Word?

I have never heard an insignificant song from Thridday, but i probably haven't heard all their music. I have seen them twice in concert and they were a tremendous blessing.

David, the same could be argued about some of the heavy 'rap' style music you used to have on your profile. I'm sure a lot of people within the Christian community would not understand its value. I think it is just about the style of the music that appeals to us. There is Christian rap, heavy metal, dance, techno, and also different styles, beats, from around the worlds too etc etc etc, just like in the 'real world', music is music. As long as the lyrics are not deliberately going against God then I have no problem with any style of music.
