All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

The image of John the Baptist and Jesus, and the modern church of today...

I was reading and studying the book of Matthew this evening when I came across matthew chapter 11. This whole chapter was intriguing to me because it talked about John's great role of pointing out people's sin, and leading them to God. Jesus also told the crowds that there was no one man that had fulfilled his God-given purpose better than John. In previous verses in the chapter, Jesus reminds the crowds of what they were expecting in John the Baptist, not a double-minded, worldy man, not one of royalty, but a prophet, but more than a prophet, the man was sent to prepare the way for the Lord. It is my view, through my reading of the chapter, that the Jews had a different view of who John was supposed to be. In turn, Jesus, our great messiah, was thought to be by the Jews, a great-conqueror and a mighty king in appearance; needless to say, the jews were not expecting what they saw in Jesus, the great and humble servant. Could the appearances of these two-great men have been a stumbling block to many of the Jews, for them not to believe? jesus and John were not what they perceived they would be, so would it be safe to assume that this could be one of the reasons the teachers of the law were always out to get Jesus, because of his bold statements of being the son of God, and forgiving sins? Now to parallel to the church today. Many great churches are not ones that have two-stories, and sit on three-acres, and have a congregation of 2,000 people; don't get me wrong, there are some great churches like this, but not all great churches have to look like palaces to house a spiritual congregation. I'm wondering, do many people not attend or take seriously the smaller church's simply because of their appearance? I think so. As one guilty of the same thing, I used to assume that all small churchs were that way because they didn't have a good message, but I was wrong. Many people like the glamorous looking church's because they feel that this kind of appearance has more annointing than a small-town country church. When all the while, a small, humble church houses the best ministers of God's word (my opinion). The Pharisees, Saducess and many of the Jews were wrong for their mis-judgments of both John and Jesus, and many people are wrong about their judgments of church's just based on their "non-glamorous" appearance. Just my thoughts.
