All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Greetings all,

I am starting this forum based on another one that has gotten quite a bit of attention.

The questions are:

"What is a false teacher according to Scripture?"

"What qualifies as false teaching?"

There are some rules for this forum. We will only accept the basics. I will not accept any post that is a posting of some website that is out there. In most cases that is not research, but rather a hunt for an article that agrees with one's already held position (everyone is guilty of this from time to time, so don't be offended by this comment).

What will be allowed:

The Word of God

Older commentaries (used sparingly)

Concordance

Personal view on the subject attempting to articulate from Scripture why you believe this to be true.

What will not be allowed:

Cut and paste web articles (as already mentioned)

Names of people you think are false teachers (lets focus on what it is, not examples at this point)

Name calling or what appears to be personal attacks

Many today want to be teachers so let's do some old fashion research on the topic and shy away from parroting what someone else believes.

Lord Bless,

LT

WOO HOO!  I'll go first!  And?  I'm only going to use scripture:

2 Timothy 2:8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel,

2 Corinthians 11:14 For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the Spirit you received, or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.

2 Corinthians 11:14King James Version (KJV)

14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

Yes, Identifying false teachers is not an easy task. They will be revealed through comparing their teaching with Scripture. An generation that is Biblically illiterate will be easier to deceive.

When does this gospel become a different gospel?

Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some. 2 Timothy 2:18

But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them..2 Peter 2:1-3

By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. 1 John 4:2-3
The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer. 1 Timothy 4:1-5

I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. 2 John 1:7

But some men came down from Judea and were teaching the brothers, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” And after Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and debate with them, Paul and Barnabas and some of the others were appointed to go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and the elders about this question. Acts 15:1-2
There are essential doctrines that form the primary basis of the Christian faith. These essential doctrines are absolute truths and we know them and we believe them. Denial of one or more of these essential doctrines is actually a denial of Christ and the Christian faith. It raises the question that when someone denies one or more of these essential doctrines, is that person really a genuine follower of Christ?

A false teacher will depart from one or more essentials. In Scripture some false teachers are named as well as what they were teaching, such as the resurrection was already past.

Excellent. Would you like to elaborate on the false teachers and their teachings found in Scripture?

The Philippians were warned about the judaizing false teachers.
Another good question is why does God allow false teachers? Are there benefits for the true Body of Christ? Is it something to do with the winnowing process? Matthew 3:12.

Jeremiah 23 [all of it pretty much], speaks, I believe to those who are false teachers/Shepherds.

I started to post Isaiah 30:10, but that is speaking to those who follow those who tell us the smooth and pleasant things and don't want to hear the hard truths.

1 Timothy 6:3-5

3If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; 4He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, 5Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

So, based on Jeremiah 23 what was their great guilt before the Lord that labeled them as false prophets, shepherds, etc ...?
