All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Hello everyone, I would like to ask if is it okay for a girl to give present to a guy that she likes? Actually, I gave a devotional book to this Christian guy that I've known for a month. What do you think? I need your feedback brothers and sisters :)

May the Lord bless you,

I have no problem personally with giving gifts. And, the gift you gave could definitely be used for the Lord's glory. There are some gifts that can be too personal to give to the opposite sex especially when it's a new relationship. Then, there are other gifts you should not give until you're married. I think the Devotional was a great gift though.

Thank you Tammy. May the Lord bless you!

IMO, the only time gift giving to anyone is wrong is when it's a bribe for affection. It sounds like your intentions are not self serving. You're very sweet.

Hi Sis Amanda, can you cite some examples of those gifts that appear to be a bribe for affection?

What I believe she is saying is trying to buy yourself love. My husband's first wife died & there was a girl he was going out with or wanted to. He bought her everything under the sun but if it's not there, it's not there. Fortunately for me, it wasn't there. We then met & he discovered what true love was.

Yes, I'm talking about people pleasing in general to win love and affection.
Sayness,

The gift could be anything and really isn't the issue. It's the motive for gift giving that matters, and one must examine one's own heart to determine the motive, or intention, behind the gift giving. I believe we don't always correctly identify our own true intentions, but there are times we know exactly what is our aim. This doesn't apply only to gift giving, but that is an area where we can learn about ourselves. Speaking from my own experience, I have given gifts in the past to both men and women in hopes of winning their affection, their approval, their acceptance, etc ... What is a good intention behind giving a gift? Love. Your love for the person, not manipulation.

Jesus taught a little about intention in Luke 6 and it appears easy to give to those whom we love because they love us. It's much harder to give to those who don't like us, let alone love us, and this is a true test of intention to show us if our love for others is truly unconditional. The right intention in this passage is "expecting nothing in return" and, of course, we do want to win others over, even our enemies. It's human nature. It is said that every action, thought, and feeling is motivated by an intention, and intentions are causes with an effect. If we do something, we will experience the effect of what we did, and Jesus asks us to love even if the effect of our love isn't favorable for us. Our enemies and our haters can be very hostile toward us when we show them our love. As I said, I believe here that you had the best intentions at heart for the person.

32“If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. 35But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 36Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. Luke 6, ESV.

Also, I want to add that every action has a reaction. What would you like their reaction to be? If the reaction doesn't matter, it comes from a generous heart. As much as I'm sure you would love to have a great reaction, it shouldn't matter what that would be if that makes any sense.
