broken heart/loneliness and faith issues
hello everybody. I am a 20 yr. old college student who recently, through my girlfriend of (almost) 7 months, was reintroduced to Jesus Christ. Her faith was one of the many things about her that I fell in love with. Earlier in our relationship things just seemed so perfect. I realize that this may seem naive, but I thought she was the one. We shared everything, trusted each other, laughed with each other, and most importantly grew in faith together. However, there has been a good deal of tension in our relationship lately. The conversation we had about this tension last night led me to tears, because she admitted that she is losing faith in God, and may no longer believe in Him at all. She described the vastness of the universe and all possibilities to our existence and how the whole idea of Christianity was beginning to seem rather silly to her. This was so hard for me to hear...after all, she is the one who brought me back to my faith and is also my partner, who I want to grow closer to God together with. When telling her that faith was a huge part of the girl I fell in love with, she became quite upset and got the idea that I didn't love her anymore because of her doubts. I don't know what to do. I feel this relationship slowly but surely being pulled out from under me, and I don't know what to do to bring her back to Christ. Mentioning it only upsets her. This is hard because although we have only been together 7 months, we have been so good for each other. Please pray for me and post responses about what I should do. Thank you and God bless.

My heart goes out to you as you go through this difficult time. I think your question would probably be best answered by some of our ladies here on AAG as they may can give you the female POV and some insights to work with in discussing this with your girl friend. Thus, I am hoping some will reply soon to you.

Preston,
I mean no offense to you but.....it sounds like your girlfriend didn't actually have a commitment to God to begin with. It sounds to me that she knows of God, and of Christ, but she never to that step of faith and accepted Him as Savior, her Savior.
You continue to go to church and to worship Christ. If you remain faithful, she will look at God again, and maybe in a brand new light.
It is important that you keep your priorities straight and let Christ be first in your life.
I will be praying for her.

I wish I had the answer for you. The only thoughts I had was that there is something out there in the world that she wants to do but can only do it if she walks away from the Lord. It helps justify her actions. She didn't just up & say I don't believe if there wasn't something behind it. Never give up on her but also don't be led astray because of her. You may find that if she continues down this path, you'll have to end the relationship until she's restored once again to the Lord. That's my take on it and again I want to reiterate that you don't allow this to make you compromise the Lord's word.

What I felt Char was saying was that maybe it was God's plan for her to be in his life for that particular time. I don't believe she thinks that it's God's will for anyone to walk away from Him. I may be wrong & she can defend herself. Well, sometimes, she does need a little help from time to time. Nope, she needs it a lot.

The Parable of the Sower
Matthew 13:1-9
That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. He who has ears, let him hear.”
Matthew 13:18-23 (the interpretation of the parable)
“Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path. The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away. The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”
First impression, if she is willing too, you need to develop a stronger root. As long as the root is strong, there is hope. From what I can gather, at one point she had a strong relationship with Jesus Christ. You could spend more time in the Word, get more involved at church.
Losing interest and blowing hot and then cold can happen to any of us. It's a deliberate decision and conscious effort to do God's will. Personal opinion, we can get relaxed and kind of take God for granted. When I feel things are getting a little lax for me, I will push harder and read the word anyway, pray more or whatever it is that I need to do. It's a choice we each have to make.
The messages to the churches in Revelation are kind of a kick in the buns. Revelation 2:1-7 God reminds the church of Ephesus to remember their first love. Ephesus was the place where so mightily grew the word of God and prevailed. God says they had forsaken their first love. In Revelation 3, God reminds the Laodicians that they are lukewarm and blow neither hot nor cold. He was about ready to spit them out of his mouth. Jesus is knocking on the door for anyone who will let Him in.
