All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

1 Samuel 31:1-6 (KJV)

31 Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.
2 And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Melchishua, Saul's sons.
3 And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was sore wounded of the archers.
4 Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.
5 And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and with him.
6 So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armourbearer, and all his men, that same day together.

1 Samuel 31:1-6 New Life Version (NLV)
Saul Kills Himself

31 Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel. And the men of Israel ran from the Philistines and were killed and fell on Mount Gilboa. 2 The Philistines came after Saul and his sons. They killed Saul’s sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malchishua. 3 The battle went against Saul. The men who used the bow hit him with arrows and hurt him very much. 4 Then Saul said to the one who carried his battle-clothes, “Take your sword and cut through me with it. Or these men who have not gone through our religious act will come and kill me with the sword and make fun of me.” But the one who carried his battle-clothes would not do it, for he was filled with fear. So Saul took his sword and fell on it. 5 When the one who carried his battle-clothes saw that Saul was dead, he fell on his sword also, and died with him. 6 So Saul, his three sons, the one who carried his battle-clothes, and all his men, died that day together.

1 This was a very strong defeat this happened because Saul stopped following the Lord, this battle would not bring down the nation but the currant kingdom. They were often having battles with the Philistines these battles go back for years.

2 They killed Saul’s sons this would normally cripple a kingdom because they were doing away with kings heirs which would cause a fight for power if the Lord had not already chosen David, the battle would have went longer then it did.

3 They were able to him arrows wounding him perhaps to take him as a slave but this prevented him from fighting any more.

4 Saul wanted the man to kill him so he would not become a mockery, the man was wise because he did not kill the one the Lord had made as king, we should never take things into our own but let God lead us to do things, Saul was afraid of what he would become but he was not concerned about his relationship with the Lord which he should have been since he was not in a good place. Saul killed himself.

5 The sword bearer also killed himself; we should not take part in other people ruin as this man does.

6 The kingdom was weaken because of these deaths and it would be shaken but God would use this to give David the throne he had been promised.

1 Chronicles 10:13,14

So Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he had committed against the Lord, because he did not keep the word of the Lord, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance. 14 But he did not inquire of the Lord; therefore He killed him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.

Here it appears that even though he fell on his sword, he did not die. Whether the Amalekite is speaking truth or seeking some type of glory, I don't know.

No doubt this Amalekite thought he would be well treated by David since he brought news of the death of David’s enemy. He was mistaken. He claimed to have killed Saul, the anointed King, and was killed for news he thought would bring him great reward.

2 Samuel 1:6-10

Then the young man who told him said, “As I happened by chance to be on Mount Gilboa, there was Saul, leaning on his spear; and indeed the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him. Now when he looked behind him, he saw me and called to me. And I answered, ‘Here I am.’ And he said to me, ‘Who are you?’ So I answered him, ‘I am an Amalekite.’ He said to me again, ‘Please stand over me and kill me, for anguish has come upon me, but my life still remains in me.’ 10 So I stood over him and killed him, because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen. And I took the crown that was on his head and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them here to my lord.”
