All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

I've wondered if I was ever going to get an opportunity to post again. LOL It's been hectic.

So I've been studying John and started asking myself, what did Jesus command us to do?

Matthew 19:15-16 Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?” “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.

Galatians 5:14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Every site I've read on this gives a list of Jesus' commands. I've seen several that claim Christ gave 7 commands and several that claim it's 50, one said it's 49. Some have even said there are over 100! Then they all proceed to list verses typically from Matthew 5 and 6.

And that's been an argument by many. Who shall inherit the kingdom of heaven? Many say we only need to repent and believe. Others say we have to follow His commandments.

Here are some that are given:

Matthew 5:24...first be reconciled to thy brother...

Matthew 5:25 Agree with thine adversary quickly...

Matthew 5:29-30 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out...

Matthew 5:37 let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay...

Matthew 5:39 ...whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

Matthew 5:42 ...from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

Matthew 5:48 be perfect

It doesn't matter which camp one is in however, that when it comes to Matthew 5:48, we all agree only Jesus was perfect. So if we must obey His commands and yet we cannot be perfect, none of us would see God.

While these are things we all desire to be able to achieve, sometimes our flesh gets in the way as Paul points out.

But are these what Jesus commands?

John 15 2He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. ... 8 This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. ...10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.

...14 You are my friends if you do what I command.

...16 I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit

17 This is my command: Love each other.

In all of the other passages that people quote as the commands of Jesus, one crucial point is missing and I think it is explained within John 15.

Jesus specifically tells us His command. In this He's telling us how to remain in His love. Obey His commands and His command is to love one another.

So how then would one classify the other verses being called His commands? I think that also is explained here.

In all of the other Scriptures, Jesus tells us what we should do. But He doesn't say He commands it. John 15 says all we have to do is love one another and we will remain in His love. Which mirrors Galatians 5:14 above which sums up the whole law. Within the same passage in John, He talks about the fruits. He says we will bear fruit if we remain in Him. That fruit shows we're His disciples.

So then wouldn't all those things be fruits where Christ says we should do them? And we should bear more and more fruit as we remain in Him.

I see Christ saying repent and be saved as He stated above: "You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you." Once saved were to remain in Him by loving one another. And as we remain in Him, He will prune us so that we become willing to go the extra mile, reconcile quickly, give to anyone who asks, etc.
