What does it mean that the church is the bride of Christ?"

Question: "What does it mean that the church is the bride of Christ?"

The imagery and symbolism of marriage is applied to Christ and the body of believers known as the church. These are those who have trusted in Jesus Christ as their personal savior and have received eternal life. In the New Testament, Christ, the Bridegroom, has sacrificially and lovingly chosen the church to be His bride (Ephesians 5:25-27). Just as there was a betrothal period in biblical times during which the bride and groom were separated until the wedding, so is the bride of Christ separate from her Bridegroom during the church age. Her responsibility during the betrothal period is to be faithful to Him (2 Corinthians 11:2; Ephesians 5:24). At the Second Coming of Christ, the church will be united with the Bridegroom, the official "wedding ceremony" will take place and, with it, the eternal union of Christ and His bride will be actualized (Revelation 19:7-9; 21:1-2).

A question I have been pondering lately is,

Who is the Bride of Christ? Specifically!

1. Is it all the Believers from the beginning of the world to the end of the world.
2. Is it all the Old Testament Saints of God, and the New Testament Church, up to the event known by many as the Rapture of the Church? (The word Rapture is not in the Bible, but was given to the event when the 1st Resurrection will take place and Christ takes them to Heaven, and the Christians that are ready to meet Him, at that time). It is said that when the "Rapture" takes place, we go to Heaven and attend the "Marriage Supper of the Lamb of God", which I understand may take place during the 7 years of Tribulation upon the Earth. Then after the Marriage Supper and the 7 years of Tribulation, Christ will return to the Earth to set up His Earthly Kingdom for 1,000 years.

However, not all Christians will go to Heaven during the Rapture, many will be left behind, because they were not ready and will have to endure the 7 years of Tribulation. Are they still consider part of the Bride of Christ?

Hi Lourdito, I am sorry for not answering your question from 1-27-09. Some how I missed it until today.

I believe that John received Jesus as the Messiah just like all us do by faith whether old testament, or New Testament saints. John being called a friend of the Bridegroom is the proof of it.

Romans 5:10 says; "For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life." John was called a friend, not an enemy.

Jesus called his own disciples friends of the bride groom in Matthew 9:14-15

"Then the disciples of John came to Him, asking, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?" And Jesus said to them, "The attendants (In close relationship) of the bridegroom cannot mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them, can they? But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.

Also John was directing all his disciples to Jesus and even called him the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world at Jesus baptism. John 1;29

John 1:35-37 Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

I hope i fully answered this question for you brother

Hi Pastor Bob,

Thank you for the answer... moving forward, here's my next question if you dont mind. :-)

You believed that the saints of Old Testament Israel are included in the bride company. Every Blood-redeemed Jew and Gentile from all of history.

My question is; What about John the Baptist? According to John he is the friend of the bridegroom, meaning: he is not included in the bride. John 3:29 "He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice; this my joy therefore is fullfilled." John the baptist for all i know is the last old testament prophet and first new testament preacher.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Lourdito Buban, I thank you for the question.

And a voice came from the throne, saying, "Give praise to our God, all you His bond-servants, you who fear Him, the small and the great." And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude and as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty peals of thunder, saying, "Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready." And it was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. And he said to me, "Write, ‘Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.’" And he said to me, "These are the true words of God"
(Revelation 19:5-9).

By this time in the course of events, the great tribulation is over, the harvest of the living and the dead in Christ has taken place, the harlot of Babylon has been destroyed, and the wrath of God has been fully poured out on the beast and his kingdom. Only after all of these things have taken place has
the bride made herself ready.
Who is she and why did it take so long for her to get dressed?
Apparently her wedding garments, which stand for the righteous acts of the saints, are not finished until all of these events are completed.

The bride cannot be reserved to just those alive at the end of the age, for Jesus came as the bridegroom two thousand years ago, and it was the church members at Corinth that Paul was eager to present as spiritual virgins to Christ the husband
(2 Corinthians 11:2).
However, Scripture indicates that the bride company will not be ready until the very end of the age, not only in total numbers but also in maturity.
He’s coming back for a bride without spot or wrinkle.

There are a number of clues to the identity of the bride.
She is not ready until the great tribulation is over.
She is dressed in white garments which are the righteous acts of the saints.
She will be the people of a heavenly city whose gates stand for the twelve tribes of Israel and whose foundation stones stand for the twelve apostles (Revelation 21:12-14).

I believe this indicates that the saints of Old Testament Israel are included in the bride company.

The bride would then include every Blood-redeemed Jew and Gentile from all of history, in addition to those last-generation saints of Revelation who have just emerged victorious from great tribulation.
These saints are the last portion of the bride company for which completion of the bride awaits.

Following the roll-call of the Old Testament hall of faith saints of Hebrews 11, the writer of Hebrews reveals:
And all these, having gained approval through their faith, did not receive what was promised, because God had provided something better for us, so that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance, and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us (Hebrews 11:39-12:1).
