Area where I grew up is rich in prehistoric marine deposits, especially coral reef ones, so that was primarily the fossils I collected growing up from 13-18, although a few land plants here and there from coal deposits. But coral reef ecology, both prehistoric and present has always been fascinating to me, although I am more into invertebrates than vertebrates.
My Irish heritage I guess that snakes and I don't get along at all: even took a herp class so could tell which are harmless and beneficial and which are poisonous (have 3 species here, encounter with 1). Now I know what kind of snake it is after I run in place and stomp them into mush. Learned snorkeling and scuba diving years ago (kinda requirement for marine biologists): my view as to sharks is that I prefer to stay in places where I am at the top of the food chain; why I went marine paleobiology, fossils don't eat you.
Snakes (and sharks) are the 2 creatures that just make me lose it completely. Snakes make me run into trees, and sharks I can walk (run) on water when I see them.
Lol, I was the most hated nerd in the state, owned all the science fairs from 8th grade on. Stuffy loner brat too, of course, all my spare time I was out in a woods collecting leaves, rocks, fossils, stomping through local creeks and swamps. One tomboy girlfriend was brave enough to go get muddy and dirty with me. Lol, Judy Ann Kuhn, still remember; I hated snakes, she loved them.
Ok, 6th Form college; ya know where you are now (quick wiki check), spent 2 days in town mostly at St. Michael's Abbey talking to an ancient monk who had made a lifetime study of the Northumbrian scriptoria manuscripts which was Research Project: "Cataloging Celtic Insular Manuscripts" 1979 Summer Research w/at University of Cambridge, Oxford University, Trinity College; Studied and catalogued the Celtic Insular Manuscripts, summer before had done the same for the Celtic Stone Crosses (Surveyed, sketched, photographed Celtic Stone Crosses in Ireland, Wales and Scotland). Had some great times stomping all around the UK.
Brb need to look up Farnborough, Hampshire, seems familiar from my couple of summers stomping around UK doing summer research projects. Oh what University are you studying at?
Oh, that's splendid series of study- I was science nerd from 13 on, 1st run through college was dual major in bio and geology since my main interest was marine paleontology; after Marines I went back for major in philosophy and fine art (pen & ink drawing). Did you see the group "The Beauty of Nature Created by God" here? Lots of nature photos, most from my backyard. Also, what part of UK is home?
