All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Two bold promises . . . from Jesus, our promise keeper.
 John, 74.   John 14.12-17
Have you ever taken to heart these promises of Jesus?
->you will do even greater works than him
->you can ask for anything in his name and he will do it                          Both statements are more than incredible.
Join me back in Jerusalem. It is dark - Jesus and the disciples are still reclining in the Upper Room following the Passover meal.  He has told them he is going to leave them but then follows up with: “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.  You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father.  Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!” vs. 12-14

How could the disciples possibly do the same or greater works than Jesus did, once Jesus was gone?  One reason is that Jesus never left the region of Palestine to minister.  He did not travel and spread the Good News to Europe or Asia, but the disciples would.  How would this ragtag band of men do such a thing? Jesus continues,  And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—  the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. vs. 16-17
You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you,1 Jesus further explained several weeks later. And that power would enable the disciples to witness--to tell what they had seen and experienced with Jesus the Messiah. AND that Holy Spirit power would enable the hearers who responded to the Gospel to be similarly filled with the Spirit and become committed followers.  Those who believed the claims of Christ, lived in obedience (v.15) multiplied themselves through the power of the Holy Spirit living in them and through them.  Filled with the Spirit, they indeed would heal and teach in Jesus’ name … see the replication happening?  ‘Greater than that done by one—even when the one was Jesus.
You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it.  Simply, Jesus invited them to pray and he attached a promise to it.  The statement again placed Jesus on the level with God, who alone can answer prayer.  Yes, it was another incredible thing to say, as the claim indicated the authority in Jesus’ name.
Truth: There is power in the mighty name of Jesus and we have the privilege of sharing in that power in order to see these two promises lived out in our lives.
There is relief available in the name of Jesus. Sometimes when words fail me, I simply breathe out his name in prayer. "Jesus..." The name of the Lord is a strong tower.  The righteous run to it, and they are safe.2    Amen.
5/Prayer: Talk to your Father. Tell him what you need; invite his presence, his wisdom, his power into your life. Thank him for who he is, what he has done in your life...
