All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

On June 30 I got back from my trip to Europe. I had an amazing time. I was able to go to Greece and Italy. I have always wanted to go out of the country and I never thought that I would actually be able to go when I am 15! I learned so much other than information on the sites that we went to. I got picked to be a student ambassador for the group People to People student ambassadors organization. This was started by president Dwight D. Eisenhower 1956. He started this in the midst of WWII to promote world peace through understanding. I think it would great if everyone was able to travel to different countries to promote world peace. there was a lot that happened that I wasn't expecting between the goup i was traveling with but I learned even more from. I am saying this not to brag or anything of that sort I just thought that I would like to let people know that they realy are not much different that me or you or anyone else. It might of been because of their custums or something, but I was expecting it to be a lot different.I mean sure they have different customs but when we traveled through there they are just like us. All of this prejeduce and racism makes us want to think that just because someone lives in a different country that they are different. All through the streets I did see things that I don't usually see, but they people laugh and talk and play games just like we do. I live in the US and so a lot of people noticed. On several occasions we would be walking olong the streets doing some shopping when a couple might walk by and one woul say to the other Americans or English. they didn't say it in a bad way but it suprised us that it was that obvious that we were Americans. The place that I loved being able to meet people the most was Athens. The people were so nice. You would walk into a shop and they would reach out and shake your hand and greet you like an old friend. then they would sit down and talk to you while you are looking around. It was a little awkard since I wasn't use to it, but it was nice to know that they didn't have anything against Americans. Actually I was talking to one man and I told him where we were from and he said  "I really like americans. Nice people. Wonderful people." He kept saying just how wonderfull we were and just how much he like americans. I mentioned to some of my friends and said to them that I hope we can keep it that way because some of the people weren't be very good ambassadors and didn't care how they acted. I learned a lot more but i just hoped to be able to share this with anyone who reads this.

Maria,

I am so glad you had this opportunity and glad that you experienced the respect that other nations have for the US. When I was in Europe for 3 years in the '60's, the memory of the 2nd World War was too fresh in the minds of people and somehow they (many of them) had the opinion that the USA was a country that should have stayed out of that war. There fore, many of the nationals were not nice, not happy to have us and used us mainly as a benefactor to their nation's needs, as indeed we were. They appreciated us only for what we were willing to do for them.

I am so happy that you were able to view the better side of them.

Blessings to you....

Rita
