All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

16 Rejoice always,
17 pray without ceasing,
18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you
.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Some verses are easier to memorize than put into practice. If we could simply remove a word or two, God’s commands would seem so much easier to accomplish. Giving thanks is easy, but giving thanks in everything is a nearly impossible task. Often gratitude seems inappropriate, considering the depth of pain or turmoil we are experiencing. But we have a Comforter who helps us exercise thankfulness in every situation.

The Holy Spirit helps believers do what God requires, and part of His work involves teaching us to be grateful in every situation and circumstance. Psalm 92:1-2 says, “It is good to give thanks to the Lord ... to declare Your lovingkindness in the morning and Your faithfulness by night.” In other words, we should anticipate and remember His provision. But when hardship leaves believers with no logical reason to be thankful, our Comforter provides the motivation and words to follow God’s command.

Thanksgiving during turmoil does not take place spontaneously nor does it happen apart from another spiritual activity—prayer. Today’s passage links the disciplines of rejoicing, prayer, and thanksgiving. Both joy and gratitude hinge upon regular communication with God. Someone who doesn’t pray cannot remain thankful for long because he is too overwhelmed by his problems. Talking to God replaces chaos and confusion with peace.

The Lord commands us to exercise gratitude because He knows the spirit is lifted and courage strengthened when we focus on His work. And as we watch Him intervene in our life, we rejoice more, pray harder, and learn to give thanks in everything.

Thank You, Father for everything! Even when times are trying, You are there in the midst of the turmoil. Teach me to turn to You for the answers when life becomes overwhelming. You are my Protector, and You have the answer to every problem I encounter. I praise You and I love You! In Jesus' Name~Amen
