Get excited! You have a Purpose. Ephesians 2.10

Get excited!  You have a Purpose.    Ephesians 2.10

Hello.

She was pretty, petite, blonde, athletic, a Christian and about 38 years of age.  By just about everyone’s measuring stick, she was a successful woman--a marathon runner, wife and mother of two lovely children, and an intelligent, engaged woman—oh yeah, and a structural engineer with advanced degrees, having designed and recently supervised the build-out of Los Angeles International Airport.  Truly, she was anything but idle, ignorant or ignoble—far from it.  And I will carry her face in my mind forever because of the question she posed-- ‘Can’t you tell me my purpose in life?!’  Wait … what?  a Christian wife and mother, a successful engineer and athlete, and yet, she had no idea about her purpose—her reason for being here?  That’s right.  Yet she knew there was more intended for her.  She was right.

Second only to introducing a friend to Jesus Christ is helping that friend discover her life purpose, how to step into it,                                                                      and dance it out.  Yes, ‘dance’ it out.  Long ago, I wrote a morning briefing called “Grace Dances”, and I do believe it does.  There would be no relationship with God, no life purpose, and no living it out without the amazing grace of God. Grace does not walk, it dances, and sometimes, it even runs—like the heart-broken father who spied his son off in the distance … ‘Was it him?  Could it be him?’ he wondered.  ‘Should I even hope it might be my boy?’ and his heart began to beat faster,  ‘why yes, it is him!’  He couldn’t stop his feet from running; he raced to embrace his rebellious son, returning from the world he felt sure would fulfill him.  It had not, but Grace ran to him nonetheless.  It is not an accident that right after Paul talked about our being saved by grace, that he would then mention that we are God’s handiwork, his poema … destined for good works, for a purpose in him.  (Ephesians 2.8-10)

Isaiah said, “You Lord, give perfect peace to those who keep their purpose firm and put their trust in you.”1  “Finding peace requires zeroing in on your singular, divinely ordained purpose—the task or tasks that God has assigned especially to you.  Others cannot define that.  God has a role for you to play that may be quite distinct from what’s designated for the next person.  Rest in your calling.  It is distinctly yours from the Father above.”2

My friends, when we recognize we are here by the design of our Creator, we see the incredible value of life.  And with our design … intent … to be, and to become.   It was the psalmist who said ‘You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb.  Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex!  Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.3 While the pot cannot ask the potter what he was thinking when he molded him on the wheel, we can know our Potter’s thoughts toward us. He has made known to us the path of life in his Word, and it includes a unique purpose for each one of us.

Pray with me -  “Lord, would you make your truths come alive as we consider your thoughts toward each one of us and our life’s purpose.  Speak to us, we pray.  Amen.”

The Lord would say to you and me, “Yes, Child, that is a prayer I love to answer!  Read my Word looking to understand me, seeking to know how to live and be, and what are my thoughts toward your life.  My Spirit will guide you as you read.  After all, as I told my servant Jeremiah, ‘you will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.’4

This we know:  God created us in his image.  Before we were even born, God knew us, and had a plan for us—he was shaping and molding us.  Therefore, he has a unique purpose and destiny for each one of us.

Christine
