All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

4He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
Psalms 91:4

Me to You

I remember the story my Mom has told many times and too many people. The time Meghan ran away and she was only five years old. Now to my knowledge this never happened. The story goes like this. I was five years old and I was in trouble with my Mom who sent me to my room. I was so mad at her that I decided to escape the wrath of her and my cage of a room and out the window I went. Being a red head, we are known for having especially good tempers. Never quick to get mad or anything. So anyways, out the window I go. Now that I’m outside I get this wonderful idea that it would be great if I could go to my grandpa’s. Now mind you, he lives across town. So I get this great idea that I will just walk, remember I’m five. So as I’m walking down the road, I am crying of course and his women pulls up in her car and asks me if everything is okay. Hello, of course not! So I proceed to tell her that my Mom wasn’t home and I got scared and needed a ride to my grandpa’s house. Now to make a long story short, she gives me a ride across town to my grandpa’s house. I get there and of course my grandpa calls my Mom right away because she didn’t get out of the car to say hi, she just dropped me off and left. Well… we know what really happened there. So come to find out Mom didn’t drop me off and Mom still thought I was in my bed room. Ha! To her disbelief today she still can’t believe it! Although I have vague memory of this, I feel that it might have something to do with the punishment I received when I got home. Not sure!

The reason for this story is because I had found another story that isn’t quite the same but touched my heart. “After a forest fire in Yellowstone National Park, forest rangers began their trek up a mountain to assess the inferno’s damage. One ranger found a bird literally petrified in ashes, perched statuesquely on the ground at the base of a tree. Somewhat sickened by the eerie sight, he knocked over the bird with a stick. When he struck it, three tiny chicks scurried from under their dead mother’s wings. The loving mother, keenly aware of impending disaster, had carried her offspring to the base of the tree and had gathered them under her wings, instinctively knowing that the toxic smoke would rise. She could have flown to safety but had refused to abandon her babies. When the blaze had arrived and the heat had scorched her small body, the mother had remained steadfast. Because she had been willing to die, those under the cover of her wings would live…”

I don’t feel that I need to explain this story to you. I feel that you get the fact on how this represents God and us. Now I know that in my story, know one died. It was just a scary experience that really my Mom went through. My point to it is that we don’t have to run. The only thing running (not for excise) accomplishes is sweaty tiredness. God doesn’t want us to run from Him when the heat is too bad. He doesn’t want us to climb a tree or hide in the bushes, all he wants is us to come to him and find rest under His wings. We don’t need to be afraid of the fires of life or even the deadly smoke and sometimes comes first. He just says to come to Him and he will cover us and we can find refuge in Him. Why then do we run? If we have protection and refuge, why do we run? I can’t really answer that, because we all have reasons for why we run. Some feel are that they are really good runners, and some are just that five year old red head who is mad. But whatever we are, who ever we are, we have a safe place in God.

Today’s Prayer

Jesus, thank you for your refuge and your covering. Lord, help us this week to understand that we don’t need to run from you. We just need to rest under you. Lord, help us to give you the fires and smoke of our lives. To know that your feathers are strong enough to protect us just like the mother bird. Thank you so much for your love and grace. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Questions for Thought

What are you running from?
Why don’t you find refuge in God?
What fire is burning up your life?
Who do you find to be the mad five year old in your life?
Who do you try to be? The mother bird or her babies? Why?
