All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

This is my first discussion, ive found the website interesting and very positive since i joined. I've got several theology thoughts which i feel the group could add light to. This passage i found today while in church, i can't quite fathom its meaning, so i thought i'd see what you all thought.

1st John 5 v16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that.

V17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin no leading to death.

Robert, the sin that leads to death is the sin of unbelief. Even though the believer's sin is still sin, it does not lead to death. Those who believe in Him have eternal life. Those who do not believe are condemned. It is only through faith that we can be set free from death.

I agree with you completely Roy.
1 John 5: 16 If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

If a man see his brother sin a sin ... - From the general assurance that God hears prayer, the apostle turns to a particular case in which it may be benevolently and effectually employed, in rescuing a brother from death. There has been great diversity of opinion in regard to the meaning of this passage, and the views of expositors of the New Testament are by no means settled as to its true sense. It does not comport with the design of these notes to examine the opinions which have been held in detail. A bare reference, however, to some of them will show the difficulty of determining with certainty what the passage means, and the impropriety of any very great confidence in one's own judgment in the case. Among these opinions are the following. Some have supposed that the sin against the Holy Spirit is intended; some that the phrase denotes any great and enormous sin, as murder, idolatry, adultery; some that it denotes some sin that was punishable by death by the laws of Moses; some that it denotes a sin that subjected the offender to excommunication from the synagogue or the church; some that it refers to sins which brought fatal disease upon the offender, as in the case of those who abused the Lord's Supper at Corinth, (see the notes at 1 Corinthians 11:30); some that it refers to crimes committed against the laws, for which the offender was sentenced to death, meaning that when the charge alleged was false, and the condemnation unjust, they ought to pray for the one who was condemned to death, and that he would be spared; but that when the offence was one which had been really committed, and the offender deserved to die, they ought not to pray for him, or, in other words, that by "the sin unto death," offences against the civil law are referred to, which the magistrate had no power to pardon, and the punishment of which he could not commute; and by the "sin not unto death," offences are referred to which might be pardoned, and when the punishment might be commuted
There exist kinds of sin, there is a willful sin as committed by David against Bathsheba and there also exist secret sin which sometimes even escapes the soul`s notice so David said God should look through him cleanse all his hidden faults. These sins do not lead to death when one regrets, repents and asks for forgiveness but when someone rejects the Grace given by God by not accepting the Holy Spirit and blasphemes against It, it is unforgivable and leads to death because if you are without the spirit you are not worthy to be child of God(read Matt 12:31-32)

It was David's weakness that caused him to sin. It is easy to see his will by reading his writings. God could see right through his weakness and call him a man after his own heart. It was David's will to seek after God and Him only. However, in a moment of weakness he was buffaloed - thrown off track and it took God's grace to bring him back in line. The grace of God would or never will fail those who trust is in the Lord for their salvation. I sincerely pray that I will not fall into sin but I don't fear that I will ever lose God's love or grace regardless. I am confident in the One I have place my trust. His grace will never fail me and He shall bring me safely home.

Blessings,

Roy

Amen Roy.

I have experience what brother Roy explains here and I am sure you have as well bro Em. You have great questions by the way. Keep them coming.

Blessings and love to you

Emmanuel -

I think you are mixing the (i might be misunderstanding your post) the life of the believer, with the consequences of the unbelievers who reject the conviction of the Holy Spirit, could you clarify your last post for me. Thanks bro.

Physical death included, as well as the death of the flesh bro Roger?
