Over Commited to the Bible?
A very good friend (Robert Jimenez) of mine shared this topic with me and I want to share it with you now.
I often find myself overcome with emotion when I worship God. It draws me into His presence in way that nothings else does. There is an emotional connection during worship, after all we are created emotional people.
How Evangelicals Became Over-committed to the Bible and What Can Be Done about It, was presented at the 2007 national ETS conference.
According to JP Moreland:
I am more convinced of inerrancy than at any time in my Christian life, but the charge of bibiolarty, or at least a near, if not a kissing cousin, is one I fear is hard to rebut. To be more specific, in the actual practices of the Evangelical community in North America, there is an over-commitment to Scripture in a way that is false, irrational, and harmful to the cause of Christ. And it has produced a mean-spiritedness among the over-committed that is a grotesque and often, ignorant distortion of discipleship unto the Lord Jesus.JP acknowledges that:
"One could never be too committed to loving, obeying and promoting Holy Scripture, However, such over-commitment is ubiquitous and harmful. The sense I have in mind is the idea that the Bible is the sole source of knowledge of God, morality, and a host of related important items."He goes on to say that there are:
"Three areas where Over-commitment to the Bible is Harming American Evangelicals.
Natural theology and moral law
The realm of spirit/souls
Divine guidance, prophetic revelation, words of knowledge and wisdom"
He also states regarding revelation:
The third and fianl area where over-commitment to the Bible is harming the church is in the rejection of guidance, revelation, and so forth from God through impressions, dreams, visions, prophetic words, words of knowledge and wisdom. If "revelation" is defined as the divine communications of information that was not or could not have been known at the time otherwise, then God is constantly giving revelation to his people. Not revelation of theology and ethics, not revelation for the universal church, and not revelation on an authoritative par with Scripture. But when the elders of the church return from a planning retreat to announce - correctly let us assume--that God has lead them to emphasize the family this year and not, say, evanelism, this is extrat-biblical revelation in the sense just mentioned. On the reasonable assumptions that God is real, He continues to speak to and guide his children in various ways, and that all this lies within the epistemic boundaries of human faculties, there is no good reason to reject this sort of thing out of hand. But those who are over-commited to Scripture do this all the time.The actual paper

Awesome - awareness of a truth that is seldom talked about.
THE BIBLE IS MY FIRST AND FINAL AUTHORITY, BUT I UNDERSTAND THAT IS A MEANS TO THE FATHER AND NOT AN END IN ITS SELF.
Let me explain: the bible is a vehicle which the Holy Spirit uses to enlighten us, not for the journey to end there, but for the journey to begin.
Now that we get to know God a bit and we get to get a glimpse of who we are "IN HIM", BINGO!!!! Our journey to relationship with Him begins.
This stage is not talked about that much due to fear that those, that are at this place can start believing they are God themselves due to the reality of God in their life (its a little complicated but I am sure some follow), pride of getting to such maturity level can start playing tremendous games (fiery darts) with your mind. Also not many experience this levels of relationship w/the Father, they are stuck in the written word and debated with much passion but... miss what follows. We go through stages, don't we? I am not stating that I abide in that awesome place always; we all strive to be there and at times reach it.
When I teach about, how to obtain Gods will for your life, I elude the listener to not forget that His will is in scripture, but greater than that and more significant to the soul is the relationship where God speaks to you.... Yes!!! When he guides you with his voice, that quite still - voice we long to hear.

Yes beloved!!! You got it. Worship like the bible and prayer are vehicles to relationship with Him - Hallelujah -
We have been given 3 vehicles to relationship. 1. The bible (meditating in his word), 2. Worship, 3. Prayer.
Hey I am going to start charging you guys for these nuggets of Gold. Hahaha LOL J/K you all.
This is why Christianity is hard to put in words, to wrap it in some shinny paper and pass it on, because CHRISTIANITY MUST BE EXPERIENCE AND THE NATURAL MINDED HAVE NO ACCESS TO THIS PLACE, BUT THE SPIRITUAL MINDED GET TO ABIDE IN IT. D.V. -

I like how you see things. I love the word of God. It has changed my life and without it I am lost. However I do see what the article has conveyed as valid.
It does not in any way state that one can have in any way too much word. Instead it states that as Christians we can experience our Christian walk in ways that is not dictated word for word in scripture. We must align everything to scripture, but not think of every such experience as unscriptural. -

But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?"
I suspect that oftentimes, the same veil that covers the Jew when reading the Law covers the eyes of the Christian as they read the Gospel -- a legalism, as if the Word were a set of rules to be followed.
It's not -- it's actually a proposal of marriage! We have the opportunity to enter into a personal relationship with the Creator of the Universe... A wise Christian will storm the Holy of Holies, grab hold of the Lord, and say "I'm not letting go of You!"
According to the Scriptures, the Lord rather likes that kind of "faith as a mustard seed...." -
