U.S. Admiral: China to have nuclear missiles on subs soon

March 26, 2014

SpaceDaily.com reports: “China for the first time will likely have subs equipped with long-range nuclear missiles later this year, part of an increasingly potent submarine fleet, a top US officer said Tuesday.

The head of US Pacific Command, Admiral Samuel Locklear, said the latest class of Chinese subs would be armed with a new ballistic missile with an estimated range of 4,000 nautical miles (7,500 kilometers).

‘This will give China its first credible sea-based nuclear deterrent, probably before the end of 2014,’ Locklear told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Locklear was referring to the production of China's JIN-class nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine and the new JL-2 missile on board the vessel.

‘China's advance in submarine capabilities is significant. They possess a large and increasingly capable submarine force,’ the admiral said.

In October, Chinese state media for the first time showed images of the country's nuclear-powered submarines, touting it as a ‘credible second-strike nuclear capability.’

Locklear said China's submarine modernization effort was impressive…”

Arab League states 'total rejection' of Jewish state recognition

March 26, 2014

The Jerusalem Post reports: “The Arab League announced on Wednesday a full backing of a Palestinian refusal to meet Israel's demand to be recognized as a Jewish state, a condition Jerusalem says it required for peace.

‘We express our total rejection of the call to consider Israel as a Jewish state,’ read a statement from the final day of the Arab summit in Kuwait.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has reiterated the call for the Palestinians to recognize the Jewish character of Israel as a requirement for a peace agreement.

On Tuesday Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas addressed the Arab heads, reiterating his refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state and said that the Palestinians want an independent state on ‘all the territories that were occupied in 1967.’

Earlier in the month, the Arab League endorsed the Palestinian position on recognition…”

North Korea test-fires mid-range missiles

March 26, 2014

BBC News reports: “North Korea has test-fired two medium-range ballistic missiles, just hours after the US, South Korea and Japan met in the Netherlands for talks.

It is the first launch of a Nodong missile since 2009 and marks a step up from the short-range rockets Pyongyang has fired in recent weeks.

The launches also came on the fourth anniversary of the sinking of a South Korean warship.

Washington and Seoul have condemned the launch, which violates UN resolutions.

The US State Department described the launch as ‘a troubling and provocative escalation’.

‘We urge North Korea to exercise restraint and refrain from further threatening actions,’ deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf said in a statement.

The South Korean defence ministry said the missiles were fired from the Suckon region north of Pyongyang and flew for about 650km (400 miles) before falling into the sea off the east coast of the Korean Peninsula.

‘This missile is capable of hitting not only most of Japan but also Russia and China,’ ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said.

The ministry described it as a ‘grave provocation’…”

Terrifying Ebola outbreak spreading fast

March 26, 2014

WND.com reports: “The Ebola virus that has killed at least 59 people of the 80 who initially contracted it in Guinea now threatens all of West Africa, as health officials in Liberia try to determine if recent deaths there are connected.

Six cases have been reported of which five have already died, including a child, Liberian Health Minister Walter Gwenigale said in a statement, according to Agence France-Presse.

There was a suspicion that Ebola had migrated to Canada, with one victim hospitalized this week with a fever and bleeding, but health officials said tests for Ebola were negative.

The World Health Organization said the case may be severe malaria.

The World Health Organization reports the Ebola virus that causes severe viral hemorrhagic fever, or VHF, can produce outbreaks with a fatality rate of up to 90 percent…”
