Is it learned or is it automatic?
I made a post a while ago on if speaking in tongues is mandatory, and I received some pretty clear answers on that. In addition to that discussion, I would like to know if speaking in tongues is learned (through constant repeating of words in the unknown language) or is it automatic (by the laying on of hands)? I recently joined a church and went up to receive the 'baptisim of the Holy Spirit' with evidence of speaking in tongues. They took me and others to a private room, but when I said the prayer to receive it, and when the woman was praying in tongues for me to receive it nothing happened. I was very nervous and didn't know what to expect. I didn't end up speaking in tongues, but the woman said that it takes time, even if you want to speak in tongues. She told me to keep practicing and that I would get it, but I have no idea where to start. I always thought it was some 'fire' that comes on you or something (that may be something totally different..).I would love to start praying in tongues, but I'm just a little confused. Can anyone help me?

I havent received the gift yet myself, but my husband has. I too have been wanting the prayer language to feel closer to God but have come to realize that it is in His time that I will receive it. I will say that recently I was prayed over to receive and came away with 3 words in a different language. I felt this overwhelming feeling I cant even explain. It scared me and it pulled back. I questioned wether I was just making up the words in my head or if it was real. Later when I was praying by myself and asking God to let the Holy Spirit take hold I started to repete the words and I began to feel that feeling again. Along with it came a feeling of being lifted up. It was awesome but I was standing and almost fell over...lol...so it scared me again...lol...and it stopped. Just hang in there and press in for it. It comes alittle at a time.

Amen Greg I'm agreeing with you on this one. There is no way that all of us have the same gifts, how can we help each other if we are all the same? Littlesheep88 you just keep praying to the Lord and he will reveal himself to you. If speaking in tongues isn't for you then that is the way God has made it

I would that we see what the scripture says about speaking in tounges because this will really determine the focus we should have over this topic. It may not be clear if taken on personal understanding or conviction. This is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and something serious must had nesecitated its coming into being. In I Corinthians 12:4-12:
4Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
Verse 11 is clear now. : Dividing to every man severally as he will.
This verse delivered me from chantings which had plagued me for sometime in my early days as a ChRISTIAN VERY ZEALOUS to be filled with Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tounges as I had severally heard preachers say. According to them, the evidence to show that one has been filled, was by speaking in tounges. But now I know that the evidence that one is filled with the Holy Spirit is by the fruit of the Spirit and not the tounges as such. I however speak in tounges and I really feel blessed and encouraged in the Lord. But no school and no man teaches the other how to speak in toungues except the Holy Spirit.See Acts 2:4:
V4: And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance

You have made it very clear to me. I makes no sense to teach a spiritual gift in earthly ways. I don't believe it can be taught through human ways either. Thank you for your comment and God Bless!!!

speaking intongues is good for you, when you are led by the holy spirit. you should not give up in speaking intongues, because it is of protection for you, let me use this as an example incase of when the enemies come in oneway to attack you, they all flees in seven ways, because of speaking intongues infact speaking of tongues is power itself, so don't give up in speaking in tongues. byeee from samuel
