All About GOD

All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

Is it a sin to pray for an increase in your faith? Or is that something that you should strive to get by yourself. I know that faith comes by hearing and hearing the word of God. I read the Bible and study and I am learning, but I so desire more faith. What are your thoughts on this?

Hi Brothers and Sisters,

Good subject matter, Denise. Thank you.

Seems to me, a key passage in this issue of increasing one's faith is Jesus's complete answer to the apostles' statement, "Increase our faith"(Luke 17:5).

Notice in verse 6, He starts His answer with the word "If". And then tells them what true faith could accomplish.........

Jesus's main answer is found in verses 7-10.........which is rarely talked about much. He starts his answer with the word, "But"=

(7) But which of you, having a slave plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, "Come immediately and sit down to eat"? (8) But will he not say to him, "Prepare something for me to eat, and properly clothe yourself and serve me until I have eaten and drunk; and afterward you will eat and drink"? (9) He does not thank the slave because he did the things which were commanded, does he? (10) So you too, when you do all the things which are commanded you, say, "We are unworthy slaves; we have done only that which we ought to have done."

What are the things that we (slaves/servants) should be doing....to maybe like.....increase our faith?

Jesus is saying here, that it's not all about us.......it's all about who we serve - Almighty God.

And to be more concerned about loving Him with all our hearts, and with all our souls, and with all our minds......... And loving our neighbors as ourselves.

How do we do this? Get into His Word, the Bible......and study it.

We will learn things from Jesus like not worrying about politics, corruption, all the wars going on between the Canaanites(yes, that's who they are), homophobics(new word), etc.,etc.........

When one reads the Bible, it's obvious that Jesus didn't give a hoot about the oppressive Roman conquerors, or the rotten King Herod. He loved His heavenly Father, and the folks. He was on a mission........as we should be.

So to sum it up.......when we can clear our minds of what is going on in Satan's world(temporary manager)....stop complaining(like the Israelites in the wilderness).....pray more(like Jesus).....give more (the widow)...........and finally allow the Holy Spirit to generate His nine fruit in our hearts(Galatians 5:22-23)......WE WILL INCREASE OUR FAITH.

A lot of excellent verses have been shared in this discussion. Let me add one more in closing:

Revelation 17:14, " These will wage war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them, because He is Lord of lords and King of kings, and those who are with Him are the called and chosen and faithful."

Grace and Peace.

I believe one things sums it up....

I can do nothing apart from Christ.  I can read my Bible diligently, but if I'm not praying, reading alone will not increase my faith.  Therefore, I have, and continue to do so, prayed for God to increase my faith, to give me GREAT faith, to help my unbelief, etc.  And in praying, He has been doing just that.  I do of course stay in the Word, but the Word without prayer, without revelation, is just a book.  That is why it is nonsense to unbelievers, because they don't have God helping them to understand.  We have not because we ask not.  Therefore, I wholeheartedly believe that it is acceptable to ask for a faith increase.  Do our part, but God will also do what we cannot.
