I want to know is it really wrong to read and to watch the harry Potter movies and to read the books?

I've read aal of them and saw some of the movies and i don't know what to think about it. I've read some reviews on it and some were saying it's not good and all that, one of my old school teachers were also saying that, but i want to know how can anyone make comments if they haven't read the books themselves.

To be realistic there are many stories like Superman etc and i think that there will be more harm if a child will try to 'fly' when they saw that, but i mean no one can injure himself by trying to fly on a broom..

I would like to know what you all think about this...especially if you have read the books or saw the movie.

Thanks Carla. I just interviewed a guy who was once deeply into the occult. He explained how, before he was a Christian, he used incantations and spells to both manipulate people and to harm people.

It led him into deep spiritual bondage and darkness. When he came to Christ, he said it was like breathing air for the first time; seeing light, smelling scent and feeling texture for the first time.

He told me that he did not realize how much demons had manipulated and controlled his mind; he had been previously unaware of how much he was missing in life. He was very much unaware of how deceived he was. Now, he shuns anything that has any occultic flavor at all - because he knows it is not entertainment.

My previous job was distributing magazines and books, into stores. I was the one you’d see in the stores around midnight putting up the displays of Harry Potter Books when they were first released and would do reorders when my stores were low on this book. No one ever came up to me personally, but I heard mention of Christians who wanted this book band from schools. That really upset me, because I didn't like Christians. I was out to push this book and get as many sales as I could, even though I wasn’t paid on commission. I read and owned the books and watched the movies. I wanted my kids to see them and read the books when they got older. Why, because I was involved in the Occult, a Wiccan (Witchcraft).

I became a Christian three years ago, and all of my thoughts on this subject changed. I was personally convicted and got rid of my books and movies. I finally understood why Christians wanted this book banned. They display a sort of innocence to magic. Before becoming a Christian I practiced white magick for 10 years. You don’t realize that it is evil, until you come out of it. I think the reason that I first got involved in the Occult was, the innocence behind many of the books I read in the 80's about magic. These children’s books about magic were fascinating to me.

What does Harry Potter do when there is conflict? Does he remain calm? Pray? No, he gets very angry and lashes out with magic. He lets the smallest things bug him; His uncle, his aunt, his cousin, his teacher Mr. Snape, Draco Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle and Mr. Malfoy, Draco’s father. Does he display love to his family and friends? Only to those, who does what he wants. Is that really love? Is he honest? No, he goes sneaking around school, getting into trouble. I don’t want my kids to lash out to people with anger, using magic or not. I also don’t want them to be dishonest, sneaking around my back. Is magic innocent as it is portrayed in the books and movies? NO! This is coming from someone who was involved in the occult. White magick or Black magick, what’s the difference? None, it’s being lead by the same fallen angel.

Rowling has been asked many times about her faith and the religious themes in her work, but has been reticent in her response. She said that she is a Christian. ““Every time I've been asked if I believe in God, I've said yes, because I do, but no one ever really has gone any more deeply into it than that, and I have to say that does suit me, because if I talk too freely about that I think the intelligent reader, whether 10 or 60, will be able to guess what's coming in the books,”” J. K. Rowling told the Vancouver Sun on Oct. 26, 2000. I don’t see any Christian themes to these books, please correct me if I’m wrong. Why keep the mystery around one’s faith? Will it really give away what is coming out in her books?

I’ve read the comments on this page and have seen a couple people say that they are not for smaller children. Are they for older children? I guess it depends on how you want your kids to turn out. Start an online search for Harry Potter and you will find many sites that pop up for the Occult. Will I ban this book from my children if they ever want to read it? I will strongly discourage it. If they still want to read them, I will read the books with them and explain what is happening in the book and show the difference between the Occult and the Christian world. I wish my mother would have watched what I read, instead of letting me read all that garbage that warped my mind. Thank God that He restored my life and totally transformed it. You can find more about coming out of the occult, at the A.A.G. group, “Be Ye Transformed.”

Dear Lea,
God's word is the final authority on everything. It does cut like a sword to the heart of any matter. Our opinions mean nothing, especially when God's word has specifically spoken on such a matter. Some say, "Well, that was in the Old Testament". Sorry, but God is the same yesterday, today and forever, and what was sin will always be sin. Never take any body's opinion before you read God's word on the matter. You are dealing with your soul and your children's souls. I say this in Christian love to everyone, stay clear of ANYTHING that has the slightest hint of witchcraft, or the occult. The Old Testament is to be an example to us not to make the same mistakes as Israel. Our nation is too liberal minded and has allowed the unrighteous of man to become righteousness according to our own "personal" opinions too much.
Isaiah 5:20
"Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness;"
2 Ki 17:17-18
"And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger. 18 Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only."
Dt 18:10-14
"There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, 11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. 12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. 13 Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God. 14 For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do."
Thus saith the Lord.
The Holy Bible : King James Version.

Forsure with the concept of modernism nothing is bad about it. for me as a child of the most high the word says "shun is evil " that you can interprate for yourself.
you see the so called christians don't shun evil they just take wateva exites them.

A few questions i would like you to ask yoself always:
1) Does it glorify GOD .
2) What does the word say.
3) Am i being look warm.
4) Imagine you are made in God's image, then wat do the flying dragons show- the greatness of God or the assumed power of the evilone.

may the one that created the universe be your strong fortress. i pray that the Lord impart his wisdom. may you life be filled with the revelation of the most high GOD.

Jeanie I really like your answer, because as Christians we all need to be led by the Spirit of God and not by opinions. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Romans 8:14

Wow, i never thought that i would so many feedback! thank you for all the replies to my question;

mctechnon - i appreciate your answer that you gave and it gave me an insight to my question, thank you.

Jeanie - thanx for you input as well, i've read all the answers that i've received and i must say that i never thought of that like that before, thanks for sharing your opions on that. I think thr most important thing for me to remember is to ask myself "Does this honour God?" or "would i really want to watch that movie or read that book with God whatching me?" This made me realize that we as teachers must be so careful of what we will allow our students to read or to prescribe books to them.

I'm a huge Harry Potter Fan and have read all the books and saw all the movies produced to date. In my opinion, it is great entertainment. Sure, there are elements of the occult and dark forces, but we should be intelligent enough to not take it personally. Awareness of its' existence does not make us sinners. What about all the thousands of movies that involve adultery, teen pregnancies, divorce, gambling, murder, theft and such? Is watching them sinful too? I really doubt so.

I know that I am wading in late here. As a Father, Uncle, and Great Uncle I see no harm in reading/watching Harry Potter. I use to listen to Harry Potter books when I was a semi driver. You just need to remind young viewers/readers that Harry Potter is make belive kind of like Sponge Bob Square pants. As for people that want the books baned from stores should look for a book for themselves. I would recomend Fahrenheit 451.

Lea,
I have read all of the harry potter books and seen all of the moives. I dont think there is anything wrong with reading the books or seeing the movies but i would be weary of younger children watching them because of the simple fact that smaller children tend to try and act things out they see on tv. i have stepsisters that are twins, that are five, and the other day we were playing mortal kombat and they started trying to do the tricks on each other. i kept having the thoughts run through my head about what would have happened if we hadnt saw them and they actuallydone the tricks on each other and hurt or killed one another. i think that all you can do is pray and see which way god leads you on this one. May God Bless
