Does anyone know what the Lord meant in John 12:31 Now is the judgement of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. ??

Hi Carla,

I did see that the Lord was referring to Satan but I guess I was reading it wrong. It does say the ruler of this world WILL be cast out. I was taking it as present tense. Even though the cross had completed the defeat of Satan - the casting out was future. Thanks for helping me make that clear. Sometimes I analyze things too much.

God Bless

Hi Terri,

Let's look at the verses before and after:

John 12:27-36

"Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, 'Father, save Me from this hour?'  But, for this purpose I came to this hour.  "Father, glorify Your name."  Then a coice came out of heaven:  "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again."  So the crowd of people who stood by and heard it were saying, " An angel has spoken to Him."  Jesus answered and said, "This voice has not come for My sake, but for your sakes.  Now judgement is upon this world, now the ruler of this world will be cast out.  And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to Myself."  But He was saying this to indicate the kind of death by which He was to die.  The crowd then answered Him, "We have heard out of the Law that the Christ is to remain forever; and how can you say, 'The Son of Man must be lifted up'?  Who is this Son of Man?"  So Jesus said to them, "For a little while longer the Light is among you.  Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he goes.  While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of light."

Verse 31 'ruler of this world' is referring to satan.  The cross marked satan's defeat.  The ruler of this world will be cast out.  There are other verses which refer to satan as the ruler of this world:  John 14:30; 16:11; Matt 4:8,9; Luke 4:6,7, 2 Cor 4:4, Eph 2:2; 6:12.

The Cross of our Lord may have appeared to signal satan's victory over God, but in reality it marked satan's defeat.  (The MaCarthur study bible NASB notes)
