All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

In exodus 20:4 It says > You shall not make yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below..

come to think of this.. I got question..

What could be taken as idol? What are the forms of idolatry?

This web link has some good information.

Anything can be a idol. A carved image, money, self, anything that is loved more than God. As far as the forms..check out the link.

My devotion today was over Colossians 3:1-17. Verse 5 says, Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

According to dictionary.com synonyms for greed are:

avarice, avidity, cupidity, covetousness; voracity, ravenousness, rapacity. Greed, greediness denote an excessive, extreme desire for something, often more than one's proper share. Greed means avid desire for gain or wealth (unless some other application is indicated) and is definitely uncomplimentary in implication: His greed drove him to exploit his workers. Greediness, when unqualified, suggests a craving for food; it may, however, be applied to all avid desires ... : greediness for knowledge, fame, praise

Whatever we covet would be idolatry.

An ideal can be idolatry.

A role can be idolatry ... for instance the daredevil is a role-- a daredevil is a reckless person who enjoys doing dangerous things. People often idolize such people,  Evel Knievel was one. A pop star is a role, like Lady Gaga.

A deviant teenager is a role and often is idolized.

That's just a few examples I can think of.

Things can become idols. Material possessions can be idols. People can become more concerned with things and not very interested in what others think and feel. A new car. A bigger home. A better job. Money. Everything can become more important to a person than people, unless of course the person wants to use others to get what he/she wants.

Relationships can become functional--seen as ways to help the greedy get what they want.

Religion can become an idol.

Anything can become an idol.

Even intimacy and love.

Whatever or whomever takes the place of Christ on the throne in our hearts is an idol.

Anything that you place over God - your looks, your house, your car, your TV shows, your money. There are many cultures that still worship physical idols as well.

Oof..just woke up to get a warm cup of tea on a below freezing morning and saw this; having had to battle over the full verse of 20:4 as it pertains personally for me for Christian art and being a Christian artist; and in general the history of  Iconoclasm in art, I'll write later;  Gary, Amanda, Tammy have covered the full range.  For now, back underneath several layers of quilts; another heavy frost morning, and I spent most of yesterday and last night writing.

Wow. We're laying in the sun in the States. Well, it was a little chilly last night. Have a blessed day brother.

Too many to name but Ill tell you that the telltale sign that there are material idols in your life is when a person does not pay their tithe to the LORD. Its not old testament only and its not of the law. Its purpose is so that we may learn to fear the LORD and honor GOD in all that we possess.

"  Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:  Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein;  And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied; Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage...."  Deut 8:11-14

" And thou shalt eat before the LORD thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the LORD thy God always.  " Deut 14:23

Then the insidious idols of the heart. The most hidden and most deceitful idols are the idol of pride (You are your own idol), then the idol of theology (Once you start forcing scripture to fit you theology you know your idolizing your theology), then worship worship. When form and human expression means more than the GOD you worship.

There can be idols but we shouldn't worship them that's the whole message of this verse

Place God first don't share his glory to any one

To me, an idol is anything you place above the Lord.

I AGREE TAMMY , ANYTHING YOU PLACE ABOVE GOD I CONSIDER A IDOL. WE LIFT GOD's

NAME ABOVE ALL, NOTHING NO ONE IS ABOVE GOD .

Many people make their religious traditions an idol. The Pharisees did this. So do many church movements.

Great! You are right scribe, I do observe many people now a days are so sooooo busy in the kingdom, doing everything thinking they would please God, but the thing is, how about the king? many forgot about the "KING". Let's first of all as everyone mentions here, put God above everything, above everyone. God must be the first in our life. Amen!
