All About GOD - Growing Relationships with Jesus and Others

What is Biblical repentance? Is there more than one type of repentance found in Scripture? Is there a difference between the repentance seen in the Old Testament (national repentance for example) and repentance seen in the New Testament?

A basic understanding of repentance (Biblical repentance) is one of the foundation of doctrine upon which many other things we believe will stand or fall.

Do you have a teaching of this topic somewhere LT? Just curious.... if you do I would like to read or listen to it.

Sorry for the slow reply, but I have been out of town. I do have some on this topic and will be glad to share it as soon as I get a chance to make it happen :-)

I am also going to post as blogs some articles I wrote some time back that might be of some help.

Lord Bless,

Thank you LT, I listened to these a few days ago. They were helpful. I had questions and comments but have now forgotten what they were. I will listen to these again. I also listened to a little short video that Amanda added but I don't see it now to listen again. Maybe it was in another forum post. I have had family coming at different times for the last few days. I have been a happy busy. :-)  I am going to look at the blogs you mentioned LT. Thank you Amanda for your info you gave too. I am sure I will find it.

You are welcome.

I see it as a 180 degree turn around from what you once did as a sinner.

Is not repentance, change?  And, when we repent and offer ourselves to Jesus, is change not the key?  Even though for some ( i am thinking of myself) is change; repentance a part of our walk?  When first we accept Jesus as Lord and Master, we must include repentance.  Yet, as time goes when we face things is repentance; change a way of life, or a one time deal?

Chris,

It is all the above that you mentioned (except the one time deal when we look at the whole of repentance and its various phases. Let me try to explain what I mean. Too often in Christianity we (not saying you) try to put things into a fine fitting box of either/or, when usually the answer is broader than that. Repentance at its root meaning is a change of mind. In order for us to receive Christ (regardless whether one is Calvinistic or part of Arminian) God has to first bring about a change in our mind. This includes opening our eyes. Once we have had our minds changed and have been born again we enter into a life that will include us making selections. Many of these selections will have to do with our surrender to Christ and choosing to live for Him (turning from sin and turning to God). Since we are buffeted daily by temptation we will be faced with choices the rest of our life. When we fail we repent (acknowledge our failure) and ask for forgiveness, not to be saved again, but rather to be cleansed in order to be usable by the Lord.

Thus, Repentance has many phases or aspects:

1. Repentance unto salvation.

2. Repentance (change of mind) that acknowledges God's way and chooses to follow Him.

3. Repentance for failing (sinning) as a child of God.

Take note that number 2 is not because of failure as seen in the following verses:

Amo_7:6 The LORD repented for this: This also shall not be, saith the Lord GOD.

Gen_6:6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

Exo_32:14 And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.

In the last verse we see that God made a selection (choice).

I hope that helps.

Lord Bless,

Yes I agree LT you have shared wonderfully.  I am also grateful to His Grace, for example {2. Repentance (change of mind) that acknowledges God's way and chooses to follow Him.}  Which in many ways #3 dovetails into our choice to follow Him.

For me two things I have begun to focus on more than ever.  He Loves me.  He paid the cost of my sins.  Yes, when we first come to Him many things change.  Many fall back in different degrees.  Still as we continue on with Him we are shown the complete; finer points; the "smaller" (if you will) things that we not only turning from them, but from experiences of His Love we learn the desire to operate in His Love as much as we are able.  Not just do not do this or that, but the desire to serve grows to out weigh the desire to satisfy the flesh.

I trust I explained well enough.

Good to see you again.

This reminds me of a discussion on Ray Comforts Facebook a few days ago.  There are those opposing Christianity there and here is something I was asked and my response:

Rebecca Davidson Why do you believe in him? Because you're afraid of going to hell if you don't... I wouldn't worship your lord anyway. Genocidal maniac!

Char Fox Rebecca I believe in Him not because of hell. I accepted Christ because I saw what a mess I was making of my life and knew I couldn't fix me and needed Christ. I wanted to be able to love like Christ and the only way to do that is through Him. I did not even have hell on my mind except in context of the hell of my life and the state I was in. I was bitter at so much over so many traumas in life and I desired to change that more than anything. I "needed" Him. I didn't accept Him to escape hell, but to change me.

Char Fox Another thought....those who DO accept Christ because of a fear of hell are those who are more likely to fall away. I remain through thick and thin, and there's been a lot of thick and thin alright. I do so because I still desire changes and not because I want to stay out of hell.

How in the world do you stand to even read stuff like that? It gets me too angry & that wouldn't be the frame of mind the Lord would want me in. It's good you can share without the anger. Guess that's your gift.

Well since she never responded back, it may have given her something to ponder and that's what we want it to do.  I've gotten miffed at some of them, but in this one, I just told exactly the truth of why since she asked me.
