Warning! Your Actions Have Real Consequences

Title: Warning … Your Actions Have Real Consequences
Scripture: Judges 2
Church: Family of God Fellowship
Date: November 16, 2014

I. Failure to obey the Lord has consequences. Vv.1-9
...A. The angel of the Lord reminds them of what God had done in the past and said to their forefathers. Vv.1-2
....1. He brought them out of Egypt.
....2. Led them into the land He swore to give them.
......a. God would never break the covenant, yet portions of the covenant were conditional and depended on man’s obedience.
....3. You shall not make a covenant with the people of this land.
......a. These were judged people for whom God was using Israel to execute that judgment.

..B. The angel announces the consequence of having failed to obey. V.3
....1. “You have disobeyed me … therefore …”
......a. I will not drive them out before you.
........1. Israel is not capable of finishing the job without God.
......b. These people will be thorns in your side.
......c. Their gods will be a snare to you.

II. Failure to train the next generation has consequences. Vv.10-15
..A. The next generation. Vv.10-12
....1. This generation did not know the Lord or what He had done for Israel.
......a. It has only been about 90 years since Egypt.
........1. Ponder that for a moment.
....2. They followed and worshipped various gods.
......a. They did not toss God out, but rather moved Him over and made room for other gods in their worship and lives.
........1. Forsook (V.12): loosen, relinquish, permit.
..B. The angel announces the consequence for forsaking the Lord.
....1. The charge is clear.
......a. “Because they forsook him and served Baal and Ashtoreths.”
....2. The response is clear.
......a. Note: “In his anger against Israel …”
........1. Note: This is not human type anger.
......b. The Lord handed them over to raiders who plundered them.
......c. The Lord sold them to their enemies.
......d. The Lord stood against them.
........1. The favor of the Lord seen at Jericho has disappeared “because” of the people’s actions.
........2. Because they did not obey Him and because they had in essence forgotten Him the Lord removed His hand of blessing and protection.

III. Failure to listen has consequences. Vv.16-17
..A. The Lord raised up judges.
....1. God is reaching out to them and giving them another chance.
..B. “Yet they would not listen to their judge.”
....1. They would not hear the Word of the Lord and turn back to God.

IV. The ugly cycle and the ultimate cost of failure.vv.18-23
..A. The Lord had compassion on them (He is longsuffering).
....1. He gave them judges and as long as the judge lived they were focused on God.
....2. When the judge died the people returned to even more corrupt ways than before.
......a. They were getting worse with every cycle.
......b. Downward spiral of depravity.
..B. The ultimate cost of failure.
....1. The Cause: “Because (v.20) this nation violated the covenant …”
......a. Because they will not listen to the Lord.
....2. The Cost:
......a. I will no longer drive out “any” of the nations. V.21
........1. Presence, power, promise and blessing is lost.
.....b. Now they will be tested. V.22
........1. What is the test?
..........a) Will they keep the way of the Lord?
............i) In good times and in bad times.

V. What about the church today?
..A. Consequences for failing to obey.
....1. Many of the promises to us are conditional promises.
......a. Failure to obey disqualifies us from receiving the benefit of the promise.
........1. God never fails us.
..B. Consequences for failing to train the next generation.
....1. Failure to train the next generation leads to a departure from pure doctrine and moves towards a confused church that accepts false teachings and includes false practices, and yes, even to the point of embracing false gods.
......a. I wonder what Baals and Ashteroths need to be torn down in our lives and churches today?
..C. Consequences for failing to listen and then respond to the Lord.
....1. The church (institution) will continue to spiral downward in doctrine, practice and experience the inclusion of things not of God unless she will listen to the Word of the Lord and clean house returning to that which is pleasing and honoring to God.
..D. The ugly cycle will only be broken by those who …
....1. … are willing to obey the Lord.
....2. … are willing to train the next generation.
....3. … are willing to listen and respond to the Lord.
....4. … are willing to keep the ways of the Lord.
..E. Christianity is more than just saying “I know Jesus.”
....1. True Christianity is a life surrendered to Jesus, transformed by the Holy Spirit, willing to live for the glory of God above all else.
