Title: Overcoming Obstacles
Scripture: Joshua 6

Overview:
Jordan River behind them, food supply cut off, and Jericho before them. Okay, Joshua … our leader, what are you going to do to get us through this?

Here are some practical lessons regarding facing obstacles and overcoming them.

I. Know that God is for you. V.2
• Angel of the Lord appeared to Joshua.
..A. Corrected Joshua’s thinking.
....1. Joshua, this is my battle and you serve me.
......a. Joshua 5:13-14
..B. He gave Joshua assurance by His presence.
....1. He appeared to Joshua, not Jericho.
..C. He gave Joshua assurance about what lay ahead.
....1. “… I have delivered Jericho into your hands.” V.2

II. Follow God’s Word. Vv.3-6
• His path has many marks.
..A. Joshua’s path was clearly laid out for him.
....1. The Lord told Joshua what to do.
......a. From a human POV this made no sense.
......b. Do it any way when you now it is of God.
..B. Often the path in life does not seem to be so clear.
....1. Examine God’s Word.
......a. Many questions are answered in the Word.
........1. When we begin to learn the truths found in God’s Word it will shed light on how we are to live.
..........a. This light alone often guides us through these difficult times.
............i) This light will guide us to godly choices.
........b. Often we find people proclaiming that God’s Word does not answer their question.
..........1. This is usually the result of …
............a. … asking the wrong question.
............b. … seeking to proof text our conclusion.
............c. … not waiting on the Lord.
....2. Pray.
..C. Move forward … live life.
....1. Regardless of the path being clearly revealed or masked we must not cease to move forward and live for the Lord.
......a. Do that which you know is right and you will find that God often sheds light on the next phase of the journey while we are moving forward.

........3. Maybe through circumstances.
........4. Maybe the revelation of the right question that leads to a Bible answer.

III. Examples of people knowing God was for them.
..A. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego – Dan. 3
....1. Daniel 3:16-18
....2. They did not know the outcome, but obey God regardless.
..B. David and Goliath – 1 Samuel 17
....1. 1 Samuel 17:45-46
....2. David had seen God work before on his behalf.
......a. 1 Samuel 17:34-37
....3. Was confident of the future based on God’s intervention in the past.
..C. Peter and John – Acts 5:19-21, 27-32
....1. Told what to do after being released from prison.
......a. Acts 5:19-21
....2. Their response to the Sanhedrin.
......a. Acts 5:27-32
....3. They knew exactly what God wanted them to do.
..D. All obeyed and all were victorious in glorifying God and seeing God work through them.

IV. Conclusion
..A. Positives lessons from Joshua.
....1. Joshua knew the plan.
....2. Joshua trusted God to do what He had promised.
....3. Joshua brought others onboard.
......a. He instructed the priests. V.6
......b. He instructed the people. V.7
....4. They obeyed God.
....5. God fulfilled all that He promised.

......a. Do that which you know is according to God’s Word waiting on Him to reveal the next step.

....5. Trust God’s outcome over your preconceived ideas.
....6. Watch Him fulfill all He has promised.
